This is an awesome thread cmxterra! I've actually been looking for a truck like that for some time now but wasn't really sure if I wanted to go with the M35 or the M109, but after seeing this [and a few other threads] I've decided on the M109.

One thing I may suggest, since it may help out people like me, could you put all of the information in the first post you made [IE: pics, websites, products, etc.]?

Can't wait to see what else you are going to do with this! Definitely a bada$$ truck!

You can find them online, if you're lucky.

From what I've found, these are not as easy to come by as the M35s. You might want to search for military surplus vehicles in your area and call them to see if they have this specific model.

Look around on Craigslist. People price the shit out of them on there but if you haggle well you might get a deal.

One guy on there said it was a pain in the butt getting a civvy title for it. Was that your experience cmxterra? Looking sharp btw.

Got some more work done.

This is all coming off.

Pioneer kit off

Drop the spare

Area clear

First bracket going on. And let me tell you. PITA. There are air tanks and wiring behind that frame rail so extra caution was had drilling the holes.

Second bracket going on

Using new fasteners did make it easier. This is as far as I have gotten on the spare tank. I have one other little thing I need to do. Relocate the parking brake cable so that the tank does not hit it.

So while taking a brake from that I moved on to something easier.

Here you see the stock position of the air intake.

New 90deg bend to get it up and away from the fender.

I will see if I am motivated enough to get that brake cable moved later today. Or wait till it is back out of the 50's to work on it.

If I am just driving around town I can limp home if I lose a tire. If I am bugging out the spare will be following behind me in the trailer.

And got the tank installed.

So now I will have 100 gallons plus what ever extra I carry in 5 gallon cans. This will give me a range of over 1200 miles without having to refuel.

Lots of electronics, engine control and function being the most critical.

Plus tied to just one fuel. Diesel.

Thinking of drilling the hole for the power lines under the panels to help keep it water sealed and away from anything that might try to snag the lines.

There is also a slight rise on the far sides of the panels to allow for the junction boxes to not hit the roof (about an inch and a half)

CMXterra: Could you tell us how you purchased your truck and what kind of experience it was? Did you go through the site Jack has referenced in his podcasts or similiar? If it was a Gvt. auction where you able to inspect it first? Thanks. I'm interested if I can get one for under $3K (dunno if that's possible) but I don't want to get burned on something not in running shape or get caught in a bunch of red tape hassle. I really enjoyed the recent podcast with the guy who got a 5ton, but he's a bit braver than me diagnosing and fixing a valve issue.

Originally I was going to get it via GL (government liquidation) but they are getting VERY hard to come by (I have bought from them before though and the process is long but not difficult). Had I gotten it from them they do allow you to preview the items. The only problem with that is that sometimes what you are bidding on is not just down the street and could involve some traveling.

I ended up getting it from a fellow locally that buys and sells them. Found him on Craigslist.

Back to your questions. You are not going to find a M109 for under 3k. Those days are long gone. Anything under 4500 and you are lucky. The A4 (which is NOT multifuel) go for 9k plus at the GL auctions.

Edit to add:
The fellow I got mine from had several for sale so I was able to pick the one I wanted. And yes he still has a couple more if anyone is interested. He made sure I was in good working order before I drove off and even fixed a few little problems that were bugging me.
