you are now obligated to post a video of you roll starting you rig  ;D

I did that on the 4th of July because I wanted to be quiet leaving the house. Rolled half way down the street and just put it in 2nd and slipped the clutch. Nice and sort of quiet

I don't need much grade when I start in in low range and first gear

Well she did not leave me on the side of the road.

Drove over 768 miles doing a rally this past weekend. On the way home about 3 hours from home I started hearing a chattering noise when I coasted in 5th gear. (now I bet it was making noise under throttle too but I just could not hear it)

Today got out there to look into the transmission (about 15 minutes to get eyes on it) found this.

Yup.. Red Neck transmission. Missing some teeth.

I am going to swap in a "new" one and rebuild this one so that I have a spare.

Good Good truck for getting me home with that much missing on the gear.

That she did. And a testament to how robust the transmission is to still function with that much damage to a gear ring.

i can make your life/my request easy... i only was asking for plain jane point and shoot pics, you don't need to pull out your pocket hubble telescope and shoot the same shot five different times using eight different light filters in order to catch the infrared sun rays at the apex of their celestial journey to the solar panels no the roof of your BOV... just saying ;)

I know the modern Army runs on Mountain Dew, Red Bull, and Rip Its, but that's ridiculous.  A coffee cup would more appropriate.  ;D

day one.

Looking up through the floor with the rear output shaft removed.

place on the T-case where the front drive shaft used to be attached.

wider shot showing the transmission attached to the engine

front drive shaft (yes there is lots of room under this thing to work)

top of the transmission with the floor access panel removed

other access panel removed

table jack that will eventually hold the transmission

First mistake. Trying to take the adaptor plate with the transmission.  Ended up removing the plate and keeping it on the bell housing.

Poof.. transmission out

I did a couple other things like transfer the clutch linkage from the old transmission to the new one and filled the new one with fresh oil.
And that ends the excitement for day one.  Will have to wait till Thursday for the swap. I have a photoshoot tomorrow and after that going to see Grumpy Cat at the internet film festival at the MN state fair.

I'm going to look at it. Clutch can't be that old and is still pulling strong.

Looked at the clutch and it looked fine.

built a cradle to help position the transmission

Friend came over with his Deuce to help and to give mine company

new transmission in position and ready to put on the lift

almost in

nice big splines helped in getting the shaft in

putting her all back together

It was getting dark so I just did a quick test to see if I needed to adjust the clutch. Started her up and she went right into first with no grinding. Drove her around the block this morning and I am calling this repair DONE.

nice. that beats my filler neck tube replacement on my truck...

and again, thanks for the pics! i'm starting to take care of all of my vehicle maintenance and seeing stuff like this is a huge motivator. i don't mean this to sound negative, but if you can replace a transmission on a truck that big, i can fix stuff on my little truck. it's all a big set of legos.

Hey Guys and Gals , this is my first post on your site. I found this site , and joined specifically for this perticular thread. I'm considering picking up an M109A3/A4 in the next month or so. This thread pretty much covers exactly what I'd like to do with mine. But ,it seems like the thread has ended ! Was the truck completed ? Did it get sold ? Or did the initial poster just disappear ? What gives ? Thanks ! Also , besides the Govt. auctions , does anyone know a good place to pick up a clean-ish M109A3 or 4 in FL. ? I can't seem to find anything on Craig'slist. I like the ones on C&C equipment. But , they're a little pricey. Idaho Motor poole's trucks look OK. Anyone have any other sites I should check out ? Thanks again.

I still have her and the build is NEVER done.

In fact now that spring is finally here I am planning on getting her back to the house to do some more work. Replace the J pipe. New starting batteries... it never ends :)

The 109A3's are getting very scarce. I have not seen one on GL in forever and even the ones on Craigslist are few and far between.

Hey guys. Glad to hear you're still at it cm ! If I decide to do the whole prepper RV , than I'll go with an M109. Otherwise , I might just get a bobbed M35A2 or 3. I plan on getting a toyhauler trailer anyway. I could always just sleep in that and just have the " pickup " for fun. Havn't decided yet.
