MARTIAL QUOTES AND WISDOM
« on: February 19, 2009, 08:24:34 PM »
Well, I figured no one has really done this yet so why not start a thread from martial quotes and associated wisdom.

I tinkered tonight and put together a little quotes collage along with a picture I adapted from the cover of a set of MAGPUL DVDs I own; I had a fit of artfulness overcome me I guess.

I found the quotes striking when I came across them.

They lay out some naked truths associated with the human condition and our violent nature, past and foreseeable future.

I'll be damned if I remember my source for the quotes. I wrote these down in a course notebook from a while back.

"Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn't even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back."

If we take the generally accepted definition of bravery as a quality which knows no fear, I have never seen a brave man. All men are frightened. The more intelligent they are, the more they are frightened.

Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.

Can you imagine what I would do if I could do all I can?

My favourite.

I also had a sadistic martial arts instructor who used to always say

"pain is just weakness leaving the body"
(i'm not sure if thats a quote from someone of "importance")
but right or wrong it always kind of stuck with me.

I consider martial arts to be as much a way of life as a combat style.

having said that I love this quote.  I'm not 100% positive that the person below is the actual person who said it.  but it still stands true to me.

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.... Specialization is for insects.

RAH wrote that in a book called Time enough for love (1973), it was more part of a story than anything he went around saying to people. I always liked how Jeff Cooper ripped  if not the exact verbage than at least the intent of that quote in later life, but added stuff about flying planes and other things to put his own 'spin' on it.

What is courage but the body's knowledge of it's own strength? And what is fear but the body's knowledge of it's own weakness?

I'm not a particularly military type person, but I've always liked the saying from Native Americans about "it's a good day to die".  I think one should have a clear enough mind and conviction of the war to feel like that if they are going into battle.
