Wow a new garden year already.

12 weeks until last frost.

Seed starting has started

Thornless Blackberry trellis (the plants are in there hiding in the temporary patch of greens, yet to be tied up)

Cold morning on kale

Bok choy all winter

More winter harvest (cabbage, fat brussel sprouts, radicchio)

I haven't seen ground for months where I live! Or leaves outside. My indoor plants are happy, but not producing until summer.

I'm lucky, here in N GA it has been a fairly mild winter. @20 or below a couple times, no weather "events".

I thought that looked like GA. I used to live in Rome, Augusta, Savannah, Tybee, and Marietta (so basically all over GA), and your ground, trees, fence, and sky looked familiar.

i have a speedling 128 unit with lettuce staying mostly in the hoop-house - should be able to transplant about half in another few days.
mrs cohutt has decided that she likes cabbage so there will be a spring cabbage attempt this year (seeding this weekend)

Any thought on doing a running weight total on production?

I've got 20 weeks until avg last frost in MN. We get about a 3 week growing season.

Oh heck no, that would require planning, discipline and organization.

I was going to do that last year but quickly got behind and stopped. Without a dedicated processing / weighing area I could leave set up all year it isn't going to happen.

Bat house rough cuts were made today; 99% of the sawing is done. Below, the parts stacked together for two large 4 chamber nursery bat houses that will be mounted back to back on a 16+'+ pole on the back. .

Maybe initially. But once the bats found the house, I bet they would take care of the wasps pretty quickly.

S'sM, actually they say wasps will find them sometimes and from what I can tell the bats don't eat them. It is is 8 or 10' off the ground I think it would be more of a problem than if I can get it 16-20 feet up. I believe I am going to use 2" steel square tube - it coes in 24' lengths and I have an idea on how I can hinge/cantilever it to a base like some flag poles so that I can bring it down for maintenance during the winter if needed.

I got the houses assembled today except for the metal roof. I still need to caulk and stain though. Picture later- these are really big, bigger that I figured once I got them together

Yay! Another year, another Cohutt garden thread. I can't wait to see what you do this year buddy. Looking good already.

I was thinking of building a bathouse too but didn't realize they had to hang that high. Makes sense though.

Bats don't just jump and fly like birds- they have to drop then transition into flight during the fall. The recommendation is 12ft; apparently the pups learning to fly need 8 or 10 ft maybe, vs 3-6 min for grown small brown bats. Or so I have read in the various "bat forums".

I"m about to attach the metal roofing that conveniently blew into my neighborhood after the Christmas tornado that blew through here.

Last night she definitely wasn't as excited as she was when I told her of the plan to add the bat house.

This afternoon was dreary, it rained all day and she had a craving and raided the garden and greenhouse for kale, spinach and brussel sprouts. She was finishing off the kale chips when I walked in from work; she's adjusted to the mega-house now.
