Survival Campout
« on: February 24, 2012, 11:47:13 AM »
Wish me luck I'm off to train our local Scout Venture Crew in wilderness survival! I hope to have a video up next week on the trip.. Theme is a virus has spread across the county and our group has to bug out. You can bring your 10 piece kit and a sleeping bag and a tarp. We have cached the food at our location and they will have a map and compass to find the food stores. They will have to make a fire without matches or a lighter and will have to treat all water. Sat night we have rabbits for them to harvest and prepare for dinner. It should be a fun time.. Looking at night temps in the 30's.. Details to follow when I get back.

Sounds like an excellent plan- reminds me of my old troop some 30yrs ago  (OUCH Im old?)
I had feared that most Scout Troops had wusified over the years-  Thank you for for keeping with tradition!
Hotel-camper scouting was quite prevalent in my time, but our Troop was OldSchool & primative camping/survival was stressed.
We hiked in with what we could carry, set up a shelter, bulit a fire & practiced our survival skills.
Most others backed up the truck and unloaded what looked like a display from GanderMtn- all set up by the adults...
Cant wait for the details....

YUP! When I was in cub scouts our den mother was lazy and all we ever did was sit around making arts and crafts projects. I think we went on ONE hike the entire year or two I was in it — and it was just a quick hike behind their house in the woods that we already played in all the time (on our own).

We didn't even learn so much as how to start a fire WITH a lighter!

Great job!  Thank you for posting video and teaching the kids.  If you do not already know about, Dave Canterbury ("Dual Survival") has 500 videos up, many of which you will find interesting and useful.

Unfortunately you are in the Police State of California.  Spent most of my life in LA County.  You forgot to factor into the zombie virus scenario the CHP.  A standing army, which is the bane of Liberty.  Not to mention the nasty, out of control Sheriffs.  For future lessons you may wish to incorporate that factor, especially for the older teens.  I assume you know helicopters in your area now have infrared sensors so they can find people in the woods from 1,000' up.  Food for thought....
