"Best of" Topic With The Best Threads For New People
« on: March 02, 2009, 07:47:18 AM »
There are some absolutely awesome threads on this forum.  Very informative, entertaining, just great reading.

And lots of them died out a few months ago.

There several hundred new people on this forum since then.  They may not see these really good gems, and might be hesitant to reply to a topic that hasn't had any activity since November, 2008.

So how about a new topic called something like "Best Of" with the really good ones.  I trust the moderators to select the ones worthy of "best of" status.

It's not a bad idea...but there is so much going on here & there are so many new people it's becoming difficult to keep up with.  For my part, it's all I can do to keep up with all the info contained in the new threads.  I can't get everything read now that I want to, much less going back thru the boards and figuring out what the best old threads are.

This is something you members should do.  You guys know what some of your favorite threads are...do a little thread necromancy & bring them back to the top.   It's a forum, as far as I'm concerned any thread that hasn't been locked is fair game.  Go find your favorites and drag them back to the top with three little letters...BTT (back to top).

I agree that it is a good idea and I understand that the mods have their hands full with the new posts.  Maybe we can use this thread to get ideas of what the members want to see as must know threads.  Then create a new sticky thread with links to these good threads.  The problem with this would be keeping the general chit chat out of that sticky thread.  Is it possible to make a sticky thread that is only writable by a single person?

Yep, go check out the The Repository for an example.

The problem is, we'll quickly amass threads & quickly run out of time keeping it updated.  That's one of the reasons we decided to keep The Repository limited in it's scope.

My best suggestion is to use the search function if you're looking for specific information.

Good points.

The search function might solve this problem.

People can go into any unlocked thread that they think is "best of" worthy and reply to it with "best of" in the text.  A person could do a cut-n-paste piece of text that says "This thread has been selected as 'best of' worthy by [your name].  You can search for 'best of' threads using the search feature." and just paste it in where appropriate.

Whaddya think?

Great idea!

That way it narrows the search down quite a bit & it will bring up everything with the "best of" in it.

Like Dan said...you're nominated.  Get to work!  Everybody else too. ;D

Oh, it won't be just me.  Everyone can and should do this.  We're pretty decentralized here.

Here's my standard text for flagging a thread as "best of".  I encourage others to do the same or something close to this or whatever they want to do.  You can't herd cats, or libertarian-minded modern survivalists, so I wont' try to say this text should be the standard.

One thing I forgot to mention: I am more familiar with some threads, especially ones I post on, than others.  Therefore, expect a disproportionate amount of my "best of" tags to be on ones I'm involved with.  This isn't pride, it's just that these are the ones I know.

This is why I encourage everyone to "best of" tag the threads that they think are particularly informative.

I just thought that 6 of my favorite threads had been updated, but it was HeavyG spreading the love.  pretty funny.  Good idea though. I like it.  It also appears HeavyG, that we have some very similar interests, you marked most of the ones I would have.  ;)

Oh, I just started marking.  I did Show Topics and Media Resources this morning and then had to go to work. There'll be more.  Lots of guns and emergency preparations.

Please note, y'all, that there is one topic category that won't have any "best of" tags.  That's the Repository which you can't reply to.  And I add "best of" tags via replies.  But just know that the Repository is already a list of "best ofs."
