Mythbusters: Duct Tape Survival
« on: April 03, 2012, 07:28:36 PM »
Sitting here with a roll of Duct Tape on my desk and my shoulder hurting, I'm reminded of the recently broadcast episode of the Mythbusters and their stay on a island with only Duct Tape.

The managed to create a large number of survival items:

Water bag
shelter
rope
net
Boat,...

I'm putting my arm in a sling.

Very skillful of you.  But what the heck did you do to your shoulder?

Boat,...

HOW much duct tape did they happen to have with them on this island?

I admit that they went over board with the supply in that they had a full pallet.  The boat was a canoe with a out rigger,.. they spent 7+ hours in open water with it... which is saying a lot.

As for the shoulder - I wished I knew..  old age?

Duct tape is something that I would only use if I absolutely have to. When exposed to sun and heat it just turns into a sticky mess.

One thing that bothered me is follows..

They used duct-tape for a way to store water...yet had bamboo on the island (a much better storage of water)

They used duct-tape to make a "mat" to lay on...yet it gave them about zero insulation from the ground and didn't keep the bugs off (they did make hammocks eventually)

They didn't boil the water they drank (even running water isn't safe you don't know if a dead animal is sitting 20 feet upstream).

That's just off the top of my head, but really besides learning you can make a emergency storage container with water I learned very little.

RPZ - Agreed,.. Even over time it gets a bit gummy.  The roll that I was using was difficult to unroll and use.  And not to mention, over time will pull skin off your fingers and can cause a infection risk.

IceDeep - Yea, lots of site resources ignored.  But they didn't have other tools like a knife or a pot.  I agree that to not boil water is a risk - a big one.  I would be concerned with the leaching of chemicals from the duct tape into the water.  However I was listening to NPR this week about the BPA scare - and that the human body inactivates much of what reaches the system...  You'd have to ingest quite a bit of BPA AND be a child to reach near lethal amounts..  IIRC ...

Alpha Mike - You are right - Survival shows are the hit these days...

I guess I saw it as a reason to have duct tape in the kit(s),.. not so much as to replace ANYTHING,.. still need want that pot or bottle..  BUT - maybe for a short period you can improvise with it.

My theory is that if you have enough duct tape and baling wire you can rule the world.

Duct tape comes in a lot of different qualities.  Guerrilla tape is the best.

Agreed. Rescue tape is pretty interesting also.

Like everything it's all about Quality, I have 2 types of duct tape...Nashua 398(silver) & 357(Black) UV Resistant...The black is my favorite and is thicker..stronger. The 398 silver is the best all around silver tape IMO. Both are quite spendy at $13&$20

I'd rather have it and not need it, than not have it when I do need it.

I don't know that survial and prepping are trendy, so much as there are just too many websites and TV stations these days.

Everything seems to be very niche and there just flat out seem to be more options for people today than there ever were in the past.

Some people are obsessed with celebrities, others are obsessed with cooking, others are obsessed with sports, others with prepping, others with zombies/vampires, others with pawn shops, others with restaurants... the list goes on and on.
