DIY Mylar Bags? (A Question)
« on: March 06, 2009, 07:10:30 AM »
So I'm surfing the County Comm website, which I frequently do when I have a little money that refuses to stay in my pocket, when I run across the Emergency Blankets.

It says they're made from heavy mylar...so this begs the question, "could I make mylar food bags out of this"?  An 84" x 52" sheet of mylar for only $1.80, seems doggone cheap to me, especially if you consider what a roll of mylar goes for.  If someone didn't need a lot of mylar bags would this be an alternative?  I haven't tested the theory...someone needs to. ;)

I understand you can seal mylar with a clothes iron, true? Or not?  Just an idea for some of our "financially challenged" (like me) members to consider if they'd like to try mylar but don't have the coinage to drop on all the gadgets.

Oooh!  DEV, you may have stumbled upon a gold mine.  I hadn't even thought of that myself.

Oh, and damn you for making me click the link.  I have a County Comm addiction I've been ignoring.  (*shakes fist*)

But yeah, why wouldn't the space blanket work?

Well, when you do pull the trigger, be sure to put one of those in the cart.  That way, you can try it out and report back.  ;-]

Hell, I planned on going to Wal-Mart and Academy today anyway.  I may pick one up if I can remember...

If it truly is mylar, it should work.  I just hope it seals properly and not just melt together into mush.  lol

Mylar food bags and mylar space blankets are night and day different.  The space blankets will rip just by looking at them.  Food bags are just about indestructible.  You could form bags with them, but they wouldn't last.

Test it DEV and we'll all see if it will work. So you'll have to create a bag, store stuff in it, then abuse it and see how it stands up to your abuse.
I like county-comm.com but have a problem with them. They are very close to me but I cannot do a will-call order. Hate to pay for shipping when I can easily stop by there anytime... Oh well.

Yeah, it's amazing how some people refuse to alter simple business practices like that.  I really don't see a reason why they couldn't just allow walk-ins or will-calls like you said.

By the way, Archer, thank you for sig'ing me...  ;-]

They say it is because they are a gov contractor which I can see might be valid.

There must be a place to purchase the thicker mylar by the sheet.

I opened up one of my emergency blankets last week, just to fiddle with it. It was one that wasn't folded down as small as the others, so it took twice the space in a bag.

I thought the same thing...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PET_film_(biaxially_oriented)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_blanket

It would be a simple matter of burning out the vacuum motor on my cheap sealer (as it needs to vacuum down before it seals) making up bags.

I think the regular vacuum bags are air tight as it is, right?

Would using a DIY mylar as an extra layer make sense? Inside our out? These blankets may, or may not be 'food grade'.

Overkill?
