Why wont women carry conceled?
« on: July 15, 2012, 01:19:39 PM »
I know a lot of women who got their ccw permits.  But for some reason the only way they will carry, if at all is in a purse or handbag which in my humble opinion can be far too easily lost or snatched.  Happens all the time.  I am sure there are gals out there that carry in a waist band holster of some kind, but I know of none.  If they are out there, I would like to hear from them in this thread.  I would like to encourage women to carry all the time.  I know a lot of men who never leave their front door without a firearm.  Myself included.  I would like more women to do the same.  I would like to hear from those who don't carry and why not.  I have several  holsters and handguns to choose from depending  on t he weather and style of dress.  Lets hear from all you women  out there.

Oddly enough one of the few women I know who carries regularly on body carries in a flash-bang holster.

Here's one (current) dilemma with carrying concealed on my body-kids! They hug me, they climb over me, the two year old still has a nipple fixation and would find any hardware under my boobs in second, plus I may have to run to chase him.

I often carry with my concealed carry purse across my body. When I have my gun in my purse, I never take my purse off or carry it over only one arm.

In the winter, I like to carry my revolver in an ankle holster. I have an IWB holster for my LCP, and I use that quite often too. It tucks right in  the front of my shorts and isn't too uncomfortable. I cannot stand the feel of belly bands or shoulder rigs.

Fortunately Indiana is an open carry state, so I don't need to worry too much about concealment when I am getting dressed. I don't really care if my shirt shows a gun when I reach for something, as long as the gun doesn't fall out.

I am never going to be a quick draw with these carry methods. But since I almost always have my hands full of kids, bags, and stuff, I'm not going to win any speed records anyway.

Wow that's a loaded question.   ;)  I could go on and on about that but will try to get to the point.

comfort is an issue  The size of the person gun holster where you have to carry it on your person
clothing styles.  Can make concealing difficult
Kids  as a mom it can be like you are a pack mule and jungle gym in one plus who needs one more responsibility
guns are not safe.  it would be more likely that my gun could be use against me & I wouldn't have time to pull it any way
they are loud, cost to much, dirty,  ugly & scary
they are only for cops military cowboys hunters and bad guys
they are not feminine they are just a guy thing so they can act tough
I don't go to dangerous places so I wouldn't ever need one any way
My husband has one so I don't need one
I know nothing about them I have never seen one or held one
They take to much time with practice and training  plus you have to get the permit
I wouldn't know where to buy a gun what kind to get or even how to go about getting a permit
I wouldn't shoot someone anyway.   I could never kill.
Guns give you a false sense of security.  So you would become less observant and more likely to take unnecessary risk
If I did have one and had to use it I wouldn't want to deal with the aftermath.
When I go to work then what do I do with it.
You can't carry them every where so what do you do then.
Dang I let my permit expire
I don't want guns in the house period. To much drinking going on we have kids ….
I don't want to be responsible for such a dangerous weapon.

Those are  the reasons I have heard from others and used myself over the years.  Some of those reasons are why I stopped carrying.    The biggest reason why I don't carry today My permit expired so I have to get 2 new ones. One for each state.  Comfort/ pain.  I have fibro and even a bra is to painful to wear.  Lazy just haven't gotten around to getting set up again.  It's on the to do list.  I do have a gun that I carry at home when I am out in the back woods.

I use to be very anti gun anti hunting.  Man that was a lifetime ago.  Hubby tried to change that and I fought it every step of the way. Why?  I didn't like the noise. I knew nothing about guns had never been around them.  In short fear.  When hubby would take me out with him and his friends I was put down and laughed at.   When hubby took me out by ourselves it was a bit better.  Shoot that was over 30 yrs ago.

Not until I met my girlfriend who was a retired cop did I change my attitude.  She gave hubby a good talking to.  Of course he really didn't listen. Not until one day we were all out shooting.  FIL asked if she wanted to try (yeah try) and shoot.  So she played along. They handed her the gun and she was dead center in 3 targets then I threw 2 cans in the air and she blew them away.  Bing Bang Boom Done.  She handed the gun back to dad and said next time you hand me a weapon you'd better dam well make sure that chamber is open and 2 fingers like this.  oh and it's a bit to the right.  Walked away.    FIL hubby and a few other guy just stood there with their mouths open.

After that hubby changed his attitude then I changed mine.  Now I am the one who pushes to buy new guns get training and go shooting.   My how times have changed.   Still not sure if I would carry daily.  Depends on comfort and fit factor what I have now wont work.  Humm shopping trip is in order  :D

I would like to know how they carry too.  Great question.  Had a talk with hubby today about this thread.  he felt that a woman could carry just like a man would.  So I had him hold his gun up to me then I sat down Ok yeah this won't work.  He started looking at me from a new view point and came to the conclusion that a very small gun is in order.  He can't figure out where I could possibly carry that wouldn't be extremely difficult unless I never sat down.  Even on my leg seems like it would be difficult.  Then how would you get to it quickly?   So defiantly would like to hear from others.  Especially those 5' and under with a big chest.

Back when I was in college (before there was such thing as a CCW permit), I carried every day in my boot.  When I wasn't in class, I basically "lived" at the library and there was no way I was walking across the university campus at night without it.  I still prefer to carry on my person rather than in a purse/bag.

I would like to get a CCW and some training, but right now it's just not practical because so many of the places I go forbid carry that I would have to be running back and forth to the house all the time. I can't even legally carry mace to work or even have it in my car. I got yelled at once for having my Swiss army knife on my key chain. Seriously.

I'm also still working on K. We can have guns now, but I still can't even put the guns in the same room with the ammo!

my wife and i just had this conversation, she is a federal agent and SHE has a hard time carrying concealed, the days she is "only going to be in the office" she leaves it in her desk, i get so upset with her because she is one of the few who is allowed to carry ANYWHERE/EVERYWHERE and she doesn't. her excuse is she is not wearing the right outfit, she is a tall slender gal with your typical "coke bottle" shape that women have. she really enjoys dressing up (heels, dresses, fitted shirts, etc)and I always tell her to dress around the gun, in addition, her department will just about buy her any holster out there and yet she still chooses to leave her gun in the office.
i think (some) women put style and looks first rather than the gun placement on their bodies. to be fair, it is harder for a woman to conceal than a guy, we are boxed shaped and all those right angles allow for more surface area and tie down points for a gun/holster combo, gals have alot more curves and less flat surface area to tie down a gun/holster.

I know carrying in a purse isn't ideal, but it beats being unarmed.

Will be following this thread with interest. I don't own a purse and never wear dresses or skirts but haven't found a CCW holster that's truly comfortable for my scrawy little carcass (5'1" and about 98 lbs. on a good day).
My CCW gun is a snub-nose .38 so it's not like I'm trying to hide a cannon. I dress pretty baggy but still worry about unintentional brandishing & the tell-tale lump.

LJ - isnt Utah an open carry state?  so would brandishing even apply?

Yeah, Arizona too, but in most situations open carry is a little blatant and waaaay more attention than I care to attract. As I understand it, if you're carrying concealed, even in an open carry place, it's still brandishing. As in, show your shooter or not, but no flashing.  :)

Here's a good video I've found of one woman showing various options for carying concealed with different outfits.

Here's another holster that uses the chest for concealment.

I have zero firsthand experience on the entire subject matter (unfortunately) so don't listen to me. :P

Good link Dainty Sure brought up tons of conversation in this house hold.  We laughed till we cried thinking of me with a thigh holster.  Can see it now step BANG step BANG or walking like I have a beachball between my legs.

Men they do have a tendency to use few words and get to the point don't they bless their hearts.  Hubby says well honey you are just going to have to put a shout out.  Just say Hey where do all you short fat chicks carry?   Yeah ok his mouth break is on the fritz again.  I know he is just trying to be helpful.

Tell him he needs an extra gun in the back of his waistband so it's an easy reach for you while he's busy hopping around with his foot in his mouth:)

I have my CHL, yet I've never carried. Why? My husband's job is more dangerous than mine, and he "borrowed" my little Ruger LCP .380 before I got my CHL.  We do have other guns, but they're all bigger and would be visible under jeans and a tank top.

Have anything else you can carry? Even in a glovebox or purse? His job may be more dangerous, but you are a target simply due to your anatomy. Maybe one of you has an upcoming birthday and another LCP would make a nice gift.

Our glovebox doesn't lock, or else I'd keep one in there.  Too many people have access to my purse, including kids, for me to be comfortable with keeping a gun in it.  We plan to get another small one as soon as we can afford it.  If we can find an appropriate holster, he may start carrying the Bersa .380 instead, but we haven't quite the funds to do that just yet, either.  We're working on it.

I don't carry at all right now. I can when I go to IN, but I live in the "Naziwannabe" state of IL - NO form of carry at all. (Although, when I go to town, I do keep my .380 in my makeup bag. (Legal as long as it is totally enclosed and unloaded) I got a new .40 which is just slightly larger than the .380, but I haven't tried it yet. (I need to get to Indiana more!  ;))

I have considered it. If I could sell this piece of junk house and find a job there, I would go in a heartbeat.
My daughter lives in Crawfordsville. She keeps telling me that the place where her husband works is hiring - but I'm 62 and on SS so I couldn't work full time (at least at the pay rate she told me about.)

I love Indiana. When I did my internship with the Fountain County Sheriffs Department, I fell in love with that county. (LOVED the people!)  Plus - it's a FREE STATE! INDIANA ROCKS!

I have to add that I don't carry my gun on my person every day.  I carry it in a Max bag or concealed carry purse.  But when I do carry I wear it in a holster on my right hip - well sort of my hip but more in front - not quite straight south of the right girl.  When I took my pistol training class with Rich Wyatt (you know the guy from American Guns) he took one look at where I had my gun and told me I needed to move it farther to my side instead of being in front.  I just said no.  He looked at me like he hadn't heard me correctly.  He tried to reason with me.  But I stuck to my guns (sorry couldn't resist) and finally exasperated he asked me why.  I just looked him dead in the eye and said because I'm short and have big boobs and I smack myself every time I draw with it there.  That shut him up. Btw I beat all but one guy (including my husband) on timed draws where we had to draw and shoot accurately - Rich just shook his head and grinned at me.

And I guess I haven't got a really good reason not to carry on my body - but mostly it's a clothes issue. I don't mind it so much when it's cold weather but when it's hot I don't need another shirt on just to cover my gun.  Plus when I care for my 2 yr old granddaughter I can't wear it with her around.

But I will add even though I'm not wearing my gun I know where it is at all times especially in my home.  I keep it close by so that it's available.  I will even carry it if I'm working out in the yard or garden. Hope this helps in your quest for answers.  Blessings,TBM
