Never seen anyone do this before.
« on: April 24, 2012, 07:24:33 PM »
I got a few Sterno Stoves, and i was looking at one the other day. Had this thought, and Ive never seen anyone do this before, so I did a quick video for my YouTube channel to share it. Thought I'd share it here with everyone.

So if you run out of Sterno, and can't find any alcohol to fuel one of your soda can, alcohol stoves...remeber this, it works great.

Good point-glad to know that you can use easily available fuel sources no matter where you are with them!

Good to know!  I haven't bought a stove yet - I was going to get both the wood burning one that Jack talks about as well as a "canned heat" one.  Maybe I can simplify!

Yeah, they work pretty well, but you have to keep feeding them, and only small pieces that will fit in it as you do. I used some of the shredded wood to act as my tinder, and a hand full of small twigs that came from a dead limb that recently fell out of the neighbor's maple tree.

It took about three feedings of the broken twigs and a couple of hand fulls of the shredded wood to get the soup I mwade to a boil, but it only left a tiny bit of ash and un-burnt twigs behind. Very little evidence that I had even been ther at all, and if you are trying to keep a low profile, this isn't too bad as far as that goes. A can of Sterno would have left none, but still...not too bad at all.  8)

Multi-purpose gear is always desirable and yours is a good idea.
Dave Canterbury ("Dual Survival") has an interesting product to go with a sterno can (or directly into a campfire to give you a platform for cooking on).
