THIS IS WAY COOL!   Grow black soldier fly in an automatic chicken feeder.  I can see this type of feeder working for lots of things.  Great how to instructions too.   Can't wait to try it.   Lord knows feed is not going to get cheaper.

I love this. Trying to get wife onboard. Right now the walking garbage disposals (chickens) just go through our compost and turn it for us. We have resorted to throwing everything in there as they will eat everything. This will work great for my aquaponics set up too.

I havent been able to figure that out.  I guess the answer would be it depends.      ah Permaculture gotta love it.   It does seem that this would be a seasonal thing depending on where you live.  It seems the design would work well for other applications too.

I just gotta get my pens build before winter   My flocks are having babies faster than I though they would.  So this feeder will come in handy.  I am also looking into growing crickets or other things for the chickens.    They don't seem to like red wigglers.

Thanks Archer thats where we got our worms.  He's a great guy very passionate. Been around for many many years.  Man does he have chickens everywhere! I so understand why he was shaking his head saying you don't want them in the shop.    OK I GET IT NOW

i visited someone who has a bsf bin, it did not smell much at all unless you stuck your nose into the bin itself (and then it was not bad). as for flies, the adult bsf are not like normal flies, they cannot eat, all they do is breed and die. so they wont be buzzing around walking all over your picnic table.

I tried building a BSF feeder a few years back but for some reason it failed, I don't know if there wasn't any around here or I didn't set it up properly...I basically copied some of the designs of the biopod. I think I will try it again and buy some larvae from the site mentioned as they are close to me for pickup.

I've heard Jack talk about this on a several of his programs. I had never looked into it, but after watching the video links posted here, it looks like something I need to spend some time on. I am building my Aquaponics greenhouse right now and have my Tilapia temporarily housed in a pair of 55 gal aquariums. Also working on selecting the breed of Chickens we want to try this spring so I have plenty of need for this resource. Thanks for the information.
