At one local gun store today, all major calibers well stocked except 22LR.  Prices are 20% to 30% higher than last year.  This is down from 50% to 75% higher just a month ago.

At Walmart today, a few boxes of each common rifle and pistol caliber present except 22LR.  There was a mountain of 12, 20, and 410 gauge.  I picked up 3 boxes (the limit) of 9mm Winchester white box 100 rounds for $26 each.

Net, availability is on the rise and prices have somewhat moderated in Southern Indiana.

Well, I went to the Big R opening and got two boxes of CCI Quiet ($3.29/50rds), two boxes of American Eagle 9mm 115gr FMJ ($14.99/50rds), and a pound of IMR 4064.  Had to stand outside for over two hours, but I got it.

I did some experimentation at the range last week.  Turned out, I couldn't recall actually putting any Remington Thunderbolts in my 10/22 so I shot several magazines worth of it.  The Ruger handled it all well.  It's dirty, but I won't let another bulk pack pass me by now.

Today was the first Sunday, this year, that I've found 9mm JHP at walmart. I bought a 100 round box last year for $28 and today the same box was $35. That's a big jump.

The only other 9mm was Tula at about $10.50 per 50 round box.

re Black Friday

I plan to go my local Sportsmans Warehouse @ 6am.  Thinking of picking up a Ruger SR22 - that's $50 off.  I haven't decided if I want to pretend it's a gift for my wife, or just hide it for several months and then play dumb when she sees me cleaning it.  :-X

Last year they had pmags for $9.99, with no limit.  A month later Sandyhook and the insanity happened.  I think back all the time how I should've dusted off the AMEX and bought the whole pallet of magazines and made a retirement selling them on gunbroker for 5x profit.

Anyhow, I think the shooting/outdoor crowd is vastly better behaved compared to walmart/best buy/target/etc.

In general, yes.  But six months ago, if you had plunked a pallet of Mini-Mags on the sales floor of a Cabela's or Bass Pro with no purchase limits, they'd still be cleaning that store up from the riot...   ;)

I will be out of state for all the Black Friday mayhem sales so I won't be picking up any deals.

As for current availability, Jax Outdoor Gear in Fort Collins CO had a good stock of ammo this weekend (except for .22LR, of course). The prices looked pretty reasonable too.

Midway had a sale on CCI Stingers.  In lots of 50, 500, and 5,000.  The lot of 5k was just over .10 a round.

That's actually near pre-panic rates.  I vaguely recall stingers packaged in 50 round cases, in contrast to the 100 round ones most CCI minimags were - but the prices were all around the same $6-8.

HAD is the key word.  I received a product notification on that and physically went into Midway USA's customer service area to place & pick-up my order. Within an hour or two of receiving the product notification. They were sold out.  At least one other customer came in to Midway with the same game plan while I was there.

Yes, HAD.  But they obviously had enough that they felt they could sell it at pre-nutso prices.  Cheaper than dumb has them listed at over .50 per round.  and SGAMMO, Bulk Ammo, Ammo to go, have nadda...

I put a back order in with Midway for CCI Minimags, and a couple other brands.  We'll see when it gets filled.

Price gouging has never been a practice of Midway USA.  .22lr can be found slightly above pre-panic prices but it is a rarity and depends upon regional demand. In my area I haven't founf a brick of 550 rounds in more than 6 months.  Friends of mine who live more than 400 miles in two differrent directions have been occassionally able to find bricks at W-Mart.

YMMV

If someone were to add "Set up new ammo manufacturing plant" as one of their 13 skills, .22LR would be a good one to start with.   8)

The great thing about .22LR is that nearly every gun owner shoots a fair amount of it every year.  In centerfire it is probably a small percentage (10%?) that shoots over 1,000 rds per year. With .22LR it could be 505 or 70% of gun owners. And being relatively cheap it is easy to stockpile as well.

Last week at the rifle range, I brought along my 10/22.  Even though I am mentally aware of the .22lr shortage, I found myself blasting away at a steel gong, magazine dump after magazine dump.

After 5 magazines I was rather upset with myself for being so wasteful.  A hard habit to break...

Well, as to that, my 12 yr old and I went to the range a couple of weeks ago and shot off a box of 325 rounds of .22LR.

Not one was wasted.  8)

Amen to that.

My girls know that I have become more mindful of how we use our ammo based on the shortage and prices.  This deer season I brought the 10/22 and two 25 round mags with us for them to do some practice and pass the time around camp.  They must have asked me three times as to how much they get to shoot after emptying a magazine.  Each time they asked I told them "until the ammo is gone" (I brought two bricks).  They had a ton of fun and you could see them improve on each mag.

I had to run out and get a newspaper for my wife this morning and after I got it and a coffee took a quick glance through the ads and Gander Mountain had 325 count boxes of Federal 22lr for $14.99. So I went ahead and got 6 boxes and a new mag for my M&P 15-22.  They weren't going to have ammo for long, over half gone by the time I left.

On Black Friday I went to Sportsman's Warehouse and got my 3 box limit of 100xCCI minimags for $7 each.  They also had Rem Thunderbolt bricks for $22, but I've had mixed experience.  I'll hold out for Federal Champion if I'm going to buy in bricks of 500+.

I got one of these by chance Thanksgiving day for $26.   We had to pull off the interstate to fix the wipers and just happened to pull into a really cool service station.   To my surprise what do I see on the sign?.....   "We have 22LR" advertised right there next to the price of gas.  :)   Way cool little store.

I've seen these Remington Thunderbolts online too recently.   Production must be doing better, or demand starting to come down?   In fact, one online retailer has 65 in stock now for $88 each (around 4x what we paid).

:) Just got 525 round boxes of federal hollow .22 for $23.99. They were limiting to 10 boxes per person.  I only had enough cash for 2, but I am happy to purchase over 1000 rounds for plinking. Not as cheap as it once was, but a price I am willing to invest at for future shortages. Going back Monday with cash in hand.

They had 450 rounds of of 9mm for $45, copper jacket. All the nice ammo was still over a buck a shot. It was still the most expensive ammo they carry.

But I was told, and shown the boxes of the 9mm that had 1000 rounds, the manager said they are going on sale for $100 Monday 12/17/2013. He also mentioned that the other store had them at that prices. They need to clear out enough of the older ammo(3 months old) at cost. These stores never ran nout of ammo, it jst got very expensive, and was only sold with the purchase of a new gun.

Local Bi-Mart is slowly getting components in.  They had several pounds of BL-C2 and IMR4064 last week, and before that H335 and IMR4064.  One pound/day limit.  Also their stock of primers is getting to where they have several boxes but still a two sleeves/day limit.  Bullet situation not much better.

The had lots of .40 and .45 and 223 ammo but not a lick of 9mm or .22LR.

Local ACE hardware had 525 round boxes of Reminton hollow .22 for $29.99. They were limiting to 1 boxes per person.

Guy said he will be getting 18k round shipment every 2 weeks.
Finally supply is catching up with demand (until the next round of panic sets in).
Hoping the the prices will start to come down.

The .22 thing is just going to take a while.

On the good side it has enhanced my gift giving. My mother just got a Walther P22 so for Christmas I am giving her $400 worth of ammo even though I paid less than a hundred for it originally.

But I have to admit I am going to be part of the ammo shortage problem in the short term.  I used to keep about 5K on hand.  I am going to go up to 20K (about 2 years supply for me) for sure after this.

Everybody's doing that, which is why .22LR will take a long time to get back to "normal".  That's not a dig on you, by the way - I'm doing that, too, and everyone I know who shoots .22LR is doing the same thing.  I'm comfortable with my supply now, so I'm not hogging it, though - if I find some in a store, I'll buy a brick or two and leave some for the next guy.

I guess the good thing that will come out of it is that a lot more people will have a strong supply laid up and be less likely to panic buy next time around.  Maybe that will make the next .22 drought a little shorter.

I am just gonna wait, when 22lr is back to pre-panic prices or no more than 10% higher, I will buy it by the 10,000 round lot like before. I shoot a lot and am not gonna waste my time hunting down 500 rounds at a time. Frankly I suspect most of the people buying don't even shoot much

Around here the only thing that is more absent than 22 is 30-30 and no one can explain it.
I have seen more 22 available than 30-30.
