No common rifle ammo. No .22. The guy went and got the 6 boxes of rem 223 off the truck and gave me 3. And it is up to $.50/rd. He says the price hikes are temporary. Walmart is sick of having bare shelves and playing got ammo games day in day out. I might give in and do some restocking at internet prices.

At this point I would support major retailers like Walmart, etc. to increase prices to a point where inventory remains.  Let that marinate for 4-6 weeks with the hoarders, then gradually decrease the price until a healthy equilibrium is reached.

A local ranch supply store had PMC 55gr .223 for $11.99.  They had a decent supply of it too.  I considered grabbing a couple boxes, but instead got some premium defensive pistol ammo.
Believe me, if I had to choose between no inventory and inflated prices - at least I get to make a choice with the high prices.

Found some pretty decent prices on ammo at AmmunitionToGo.  Picked up some whitebox Win Bonded 180 gr .40S&W for about $28/50 (basically brass cased PDX1 from LE overflow) and some 64 gr Speer LE Gold Dot .223 for just over $20/20.  Cabela's had under $30/20 for .40 and .45ACP Win PDX1. I don't shoot the premium stuff much but every once and in while I need to top off the supply even though I handload 99% of what I shoot in practice.

Natchezss.com has good selection of primers in stock.  Around $38/1,000 but at least there are some available in most sizes.

Same deal with me, but you should always have some amount of quality commercial rounds.  Not only are there legal considerations for CCW, but the barter/resell value will always far outweigh even your best handloads.

Prices here in Southern Ontario (Toronto/Hamilton area) are ticking up slightly but supplies are virtually uninterrupted. No idea how we continue to get ammo and those in the U.S. cannot, maybe it is just a lot more gun owners chasing a limited supply down your way.

Below you can see the prices (in CDN dollars, which is equal to the U.S. dollar now) I paid this weekend for 525 round boxes of .22LR; the smaller box in the bottom left is for a 50 round box.

By contrast, earlier this year I paid $22.00 for 500 box of Remington .22LR. So a slight increase in prices has occurred (about +10%), but no shortages in my local LGS.

Yesterday Sportsmans Warehouse in Federal Way, WA had all sorts of .223/5.56, including 62gr, VMax, Fed xm855 bulk packs, etc.

I got a couple boxes of American Eagle, just to "get something", but wasn't thrilled to pay $10/box.

They also had NATO 7.62, 7.62x54R and 7.62x39mm all in bulk quantities.

Primers were down to large pistol and large rifle varieties.  And they literally had 6 bottles of smokeless powder for oddball applications.

On a business trip last week, I visited "http://www.jrshootingsports.com/" in Aurora, IL.  They had lots of ammo of every caliber, except .22LR.  When I asked about .22LR, they said that they had bricks of 550 rounds that morning and sold the last six boxes.  They sold for $59 per brick/box.

I did not know what to expect in the state of Illinois, but I was rather impressed with the size and the supplies in this store.  They carry rifles, pistols, archery and reloading supplies. This store also has an indoor pistol range. IMO, prices were about 10%-15% higher than they should be for supplies and closer to 20% higher than average on pistols.  But perhaps this is because of the state laws and regulations which increase operating costs.  I don't know.

In Vegas at the shop they actually are seeing prices stabilize. They had 250k of .22 in but it all got flipped to a different retailer. We have PMC .40 in for around 360/1k and American Eagle in the 380/1k range.  We also have lots of cases of .45 and of course the 12ga slugs.

The gun shelves are back to pre 12/12 levels.

The most difficult caliber I have heard is for the Mosins the 7.62x54r which we have a number of crates full of priced at sub-200. Its not that fun when we sell one but don't have the ammo to go with it.

On a nice trip to Wisconsin and I stopped in a local Fleet Farm store and they did have a fair amount of ammo in stock.

No 22lr - but a bunch of spam can style Russian ammo could be found.

I got 3 unopened bricks of federal and about a dozen 100packs of various CCI mini-mags.

I don't yet have the urgency to pay a premium for .22lr, but at some point I might need to.

Midwayusa still has what I would call reasonable prices given the state of things and their notification system works quite well...but...they have a 1 per limit and its 19.99 shipping on that 1 item. It hurts but 1, 1000rnd box a month isn't that bad. They seem to get winchester and Remington ammo in regularly but it sells out in less than 5min usually.  Eh, it is what it is these days. I refuse to stop shooting though and i own an awful lot of .22 rifles that need lovin :) Plus I have an appleseed event to attend in 3 weeks.

I use Midwayusa.com but the above website is a great reference point. For 12ga nobody can beat Wallmart from what ive seen.

You can check one of these but they are all the same company from what ive seen online:
Lucky Gunner, Ammo.net, BulkAmmo.com, AmmoforSale.com, GunsForSale.com, and Military Ballistic Industries.

.22 LR
.22 Short
.22 Magnum
.45-70

Not to get too far off topic but can anyone beat walmart on ammo prices? The only prices I've seen better than walmart were online--until shipping was factored in. For common ammo (.22lr, 9mm, .40, .45, .223 etc) even the local gun shops can't get close.

Back on topic:
Stopped at a walmart about 100 miles away since I had to travel for work, they had everything but 9mm and .22lr on the shelves. Even had some 7.62x39 and .223

I doubt anyone can get close to Wal-Mart's prices, just like in most other areas.  They buy in ridiculous volumes, so they get much better prices from the manufacturers.  Your local gun shop buys ammo by the crate, Wal-Mart buys it by the boxcar.  Even the big sporting goods and outdoors chain stores don't buy in the volumes that Wal-Mart can.

I still don't buy much ammo from Wal-Mart, though.  I'd rather support the local shops whenever I can.  I figure I'd rather keep the local guys in business rather than save a dollar on a box of ammo.  But with ammo the way it is right now, I'll buy it anywhere I can (that has reasonable prices), and that includes Wal-Mart.

Pro tip for folks buying from Midway USA:  look in their "Free Shipping" section.  There are a number of small items that are usually under $10 or so.  The way their system works, if you add a free shipping item to an order, they will deduct whatever the shipping cost of that item would have been from your shipping cost.  So, you buy a brick of .22LR.  The shipping on that alone is $16.  Add in a $10 pocketknife or pair of pocket binoculars from the free shipping section, and the shipping is reduced to $6.  You still pay the same total price, but at least you're getting something for your money rather than just paying shipping.

I run several shooting programs. Federal has always been a big supporter of youth programs but even that ammo had dried up. Federal said that .22 ammo, which they sold to these programs for $16.50/500, was put on hold during the shortage. They stopped making .22 and focused on the big money, 9mm, .45 and .223, which was out of control.

They were told that youth programs across the country wer going to go extinct, if there was no ammo. My programs had enjoyed semi auto .22 rifles and handguns, shot on resettable target racks and was a lot of fun. We had money, but could not find ammo. I was down to only putting out single shot rifles and single action pistols with metered ammo just to preserve my dwindling supply.

Federal listened. They activated 5% of their production for .22 only for these programs. It took 4 month to bring it together, but they delivered on their promise. .22 ammo, $16.50/500 plus shipping. The pallet of 55,000 rounds arrived just in time. We hold a Family Fun Shoot every year, open to the public where people can come out, get some safety instructiong and shoot a wide variety of firearms and calibers. Federal saved that event from being greatly downsized.

It proved that manufacturers are responsible for the .22 shortage by focusing on the high dollar calibers. That is supply and demand. It also shows that, at least Federal, understand unintended consequences, and did the right thing to keep a portion of this younger generation involved.

Supplies were much better at Academy here yesterday.

Really the only thing they didn't have was .22. The only thing still being rationed was 9mm.

Was shopping at Bi-Mart this afternoon and was stunned to see some ammo on the shelf again.  Everything is limited to two apiece per customer.
- Liberty 5.56 55 gr for $8.99/box (lots!)
- 100 rd value box of WWB 9mm
- 50 rds of WWB .40 for $20
- Lots of 17 HRM but no .22LR
- two value packs of Remington UMC 250 rds .380 auto

Left over ammo was for .30-30 (several boxes), .300 WM, .300 Savage, .41 mag and a few others.

They had one lonely box of small pistol and small pistol magnum primers and selling two sleeves (2x100) at a time.  I did pick up a couple fo boxes of .430" 300 gr XTP bullets and some #6 field loads for 12 ga. (about twice the cost of just a year ago but I ran dry).
Zilch powder.  A small amount of Siearra, Banes and Nosler bullets but thin on Hornady.

Overall, the most I have seen in months at this store but still sparse.  At least if you need some they have it, just not in great quantity.

I'm setup to start loading .223/5.56 save for powder.  I've got the dies, brass, primers and some bullets.

It's been 9+ months since I could locally find a suitable rifle powder.  I'm considering using trailboss even though I don't expect it to cycle the bolt.

Powder Valley as 1# cans of Accurate 2460 which is suitable for the .223 (little faster than TAC, little slower than AA2230).

Natchez has Win748 in stock, which is around the same speed as BLC2 (excellent powder) and IMR4064. Even better they have IMR 3031, 4064, and 4198 in stock.  Out of all of those I would pick IMR 3031 and 4064 for the .223.

Or if you are in the Portland area any time I can give/sell/trade you some BLC2, H335, TAC (you can have that one), H4895, and/or Varget.

I've been meaning to get some IMR4064 as it's extremely versatile.  Thus far I've been too cheap to place a large enough order to offset the hazmat charges.

A while back a dude at work, who's slightly of the "mall ninja" persuasion bought over 20# of random powders online.  This was around last Christmas when everything went to hell and the panic was in full swing.  He had no idea what he'd bought.  I happily took some jars of IMR TrailBoss off his hands.  The price was 20% higher than it should have been, but now I've got enough to load a few thousand powder puff rounds of .38spl.  I also have about 2k small pistol primers, and 20# of lead ignots.

Unfortunately the "cowboy" components don't lend themselves to black rifles.  I'll ping you next time I head down toward PDX.
