Rusty cast iron pans

I was given about 7 cast iron pans mostly skillets "that's the good news". The bad news is all of them are rusty. Can anyone give me some suggestions on getting these pans back in order. I am planning on having my sons boy scout troop repair them on our next campout or patrol meeting.

let them soke in diet coke for about a day the carbonation will help de-oxytise  the rust and make it much easier to take off

I just scrub with steel wool until the rust's gone, then wipe down with bacon grease or lard.  I don't bother with baking them, or whatever like Lodge stickers say on new pieces.  They're going to stick for a bit anyway until you cook with them a few times.

Unless there is really thick rust, I just toss em in the oven when i run the auto clean cycle.  It pretty much bakes everything off, rust and all, and then wipe it down with a sponge, dry it thoroughly and season with flaxseed oil.  If the rust is too thick for that method, it ain't worth dealing with the pitting.

Most people are way to rough on their rusty cast iron, imho. I take a scrub pad and rub it down, rinse it off, heat it on the stove and wipe it down with lard. 2 or 3 times of this usually fixes 99% of rusty skillets and dutch ovens I've fixed, except for those with thick scaly rust, in which case I'll start with a hand held wire brush to knock the scale off, then start as above.

Any skillet I've seen that had a wire wheel taken to it was ever right afterwards. Also, I never let any oils or grease that is not animal based touch my skillets, and it makes a huge difference.

We always burn them in an open fire. Then scrub with steel wool. Then set about seasoning.
