13 in 13 for ScottyK
« on: March 23, 2013, 09:06:51 PM »
I think this would be an easier way for me to track my skills. I can bookmark this and come back each time and record progress. Ideas and suggestions welcome, especially for my "Preparedness skills", where I'm drawing a blank.

Spirituality

Complete at least four Bible Reading Plans on YouVersion.com (One a quarter)

Food Storage

Achieve a two week supply of food and water for my family.  (Self, Wife, 3 small kids, 20 Year old with daughter & Mom-in-Law)

Education

Work through Beginning Algebra book (blue one from Weber State).
Pass Beginning Algebra CLEP test at Tinker AFB.
Read 37 books in 2012. Goal for 2013 is 40 books.

Note - The only class I ever bombed in college was algebra. I kept the textbook, and would like to teach myself. Passing the CLEP test will (in my mind) will mean I've learned enough Algebra to get college credit.

Concealed Weapons Permitt

Purchase a 9mm handgun. (Complete)
Demonstrate proficiency in shooting 9mm
Attend a CCW class
Obtain CCW from State of Oklahoma.

Fitness

Pass the Air Force Fitness Test for my age Group (March).
Achieve and Maintain a 38 inch waist (currently 42 inch waist) by Dec 31, 2013.
Pass Fit Test again in October. Exercise for at least 30 minutes 3 times a week.

Cycling

Get Bike out of storage.
Get bike tuned up at Al's Bike Shop
Find a helmet big enough for my head.
Bike ride with family around neighborhood once a month.
Bike to Work Once?

Preparedness Skills

I want something here, need help with this one...

Firearms

Become familiar with both shotguns.
Demonstrate ability to clean and maintain both shotguns.
Fire a different shotgun round other that bird shot.
Go shotgun shooting once a quarter.

Nutrition

Limit soda intake to # per week.
Drink at least # glasses of water per day.
Vitamins?

Note - still trying to come up with a reasonable goal to limit soda intake.

Camping

Purchase a family tent OR demonstrate proficiency in setting up old canvas family tent
Sleep in tent once a quarter.

Science

Improve meteorology skills by completing test in the book, "Meteorology Simplified".

Note - Weather fascinates me, and I have a meteorology book with a overall test in the back. It doesn't count for college credit, but completing it will tell me I've learned a few things about meteorology

Family Fun

Set up a Family Home evening like the LDS have once a week.
Take youngest daughter out on a date night at least once a quarter.
Go Geocaching with the family once a month.

Gardening

Successfully harvest two different items from new garden in backyard (Where trampoline used to sit)

RE: pop intake. Maybe find something you like that can be substituted like iced tea, etc. Even if it has sugar, but not industrial corn syrup, it could be a reasonable transition.

Nice set of goals

For gardening, I'd recommend carrots and zucchini - zucchini are easy to grow and produce tons & kids like carrots and have fun watching them grow.

For preparedness, you've already posted quite a few things that would fall in that category...maybe a create a bug-out bag and bug-out location if you live in a city? What about scenario planning - thinking through what risks you are most exposed to and what you can do now to mitigate it?

If you have a question on algebra, post it here.

Thanks for the input everyone! I'm getting ready to post my status on these skills since I first posted this. I'll see where I can incorporate your ideas.
