while encrypyted email is great what about giving files to friends. thinking more about encrypted network drive idea.

You could use truecrypt or a similar encryption software along with dropbox, google drive, etc... if you want to be absoloutely certain of security. if you are willing to believe what the service provide tells you, then you should consider spideroak.

bit torrent now has a direct pier to pier drop box folder that is keyed. This does not go through a server.

The very large corporation I work for has had us encrypt the drives in our laptops.

Anything that is stored on an internet company server can be counted on to be copied to some government database somewhere. If it isn't on a server, they would need to try a little harder go get it. The 4th amendment is under even more attack than the 2nd and as Jack says none of those ass-clowns gives a damn.

also check out aerofs, dont forget about SSH. SSH is great and very secure but you would need to change some router settings for port forwarding so I wouldent get into that unless you are sure you know what your doing.
