Earth-bermed dome photo
« on: September 28, 2013, 08:42:08 PM »
Been working on my underground house, and took a photo yesterday morning...

It's really awesome to have a below-freezing night outside, and wake up to 60+ degrees inside without having any sort of heating whatsoever! 8)

It's a bit over 800 sqft; bed, bath, kitchen, main room, pantry. And the front yard is a good 50ft deep out to that dropoff. The ceilings are 12ft high in the center.

You're a Hobbit! (The North American variety, of course.)

I'll dig up some more photos, but you can see the whole rough construction process in a video I put together for GetRichSlowly.com a year or two back:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQ6uyFdRvs0

Christphr - I got the plans and the basic construction kit from Performance Building Systems. Jack interviewed the company founder, Gene Pearcey, not too long ago (Episode 1116). I would definitely recommend them!

This past week I spent stuccoing the inside of the concrete shell. Two coats of a bright white stucco leave if much brighter and more inviting than raw concrete.

(the greyish areas are still wet, and will dry to match the rest)

How long have you been working on this project? Are you happy with the PBS materials?  Thanks!

I did the major construction in 2009, and have been very slowly working on it (and other projects on the property) on weekends ever since. I am hoping to spend the whole summer of 2014 living in it, which would allow me to make a bunch of progress.

I have been very happy with PBS, from the floorplan design through their onsite inspection prior to spraying concrete and all the questions I've had both before and after.
