Poisonous wheat fungus at high levels now
« on: August 18, 2014, 09:30:31 AM »
Heads up:

http://news.yahoo.com/u-farmers-fight-poisonous-wheat-fungus-cleaning-waiting-050340121--sector.html

While a certain amount of blight is always present in most crops, apparently this year's soft red winter wheat has been hit badly by the fungus, which develops when it rains during the crop's key growing period.  The fungus shrivels the wheat grains and turns them pink.  Humans and animals who eat this fungus develop vomiting and diarrhea because of the poisons secreted by the fungus.

Soft red winter wheat is primarily used for breakfast cereal and wheat.

Totally eliminating the diseased wheat is not possible, so farmers pay to have the wheat "cleaned" and mixed with non-infected wheat to get to "sellable" levels.

Just a heads up for those who enjoy wheat-based products.  BTW, pasta is made with semolina, a different kind of wheat.

If you can't take the wheat, try eating roast pigeon.
