ZQI 9mm 123gr FMJ Wally World
« on: September 02, 2014, 02:48:52 PM »
I like to try different ammo now and then so today I saw some ZQI branded 9mm in WalCrack for $12.97 abox of 50 rnds. I have used their 7.62 NATO before with good results so I figured why not. This ammo is manufactured in Turkey. Here's some of the specs I found-      O.A.L 1.165"
case length .748"
powder charge 6.3gr (unknown ball type powder)
bullet 123.9gr
case weight 60.3gr.
Bullet seems to have some type of black sealant, very hard to pull with a centrifugal hammer puller. I'll shoot some in my new HK VP9 tomorrow and give a range report. Someone elsewhere said last year these were up in the $20 plus a box range at WalMart last year. $12.97 seemed reasonable for re-loadable brass at the moment. I have pics and will post them after I host them somewhere.

Sorry everyone, having trouble embedding. Maybe a size limit?

Well, fired 100 rounds of this yesterday. Had three FTF on the first fifty rounds, one on the second fifty round box. Not real accurate but shot clean enough. Probably would choose other ammo if available before buying this again.

I'll start by saying I've done work for this company (photo and video). Due to our relationship, I wind up practicing frequently with their ammunition in 9mm and 556.

The ammunition is loaded to NATO spec and runs hotter than common 9mm Luger or .223. For whatever it's worth, I've gone through about 6 boxes of 9mm in a Sig225 and Ruger Blackhawk with conversion cylinder and have had no failures to fire. We also did a mild reliability test with 6 different handguns (Glock 17,19,26; Sig226; M92; SW MP) firing through about 100rnds per gun without a stoppage.  I've been reloading 9mm for years, so the only other bulk ammo I can compare it to is Wolf, which doesn't really compare.

I've also shot several hundred rounds of 556 (SS109) in an Essential Arms J15 w M4 upper with no failures. IMO it shoots as well or better than the LC XM855 stuff, far better than Winchester white box and Wolf, nowhere near as well as green box Remington or my reloads.

As to reloading the cases, the brass is thick and they have crimped primers which have to be reamed like other mil brass. Haven't had any issues.

I'm in no way discounting anybody's less than great experience with the stuff, just relaying that I use it and I've worked with the company. I like the people and I like their product. Also looking forward to them clearing the regulatory hurdles to importing or license manufacturing MKE firearms (many of which are themselves license-manufactured HKs) stateside.

FTF make me nervous with new guns.  I usually get rid of them if the problem doesn't clear after a few boxes.  Most service pistols slouch as the HK shouldn't need much break in.
