Quail Cages
« on: September 10, 2014, 11:06:15 PM »
I have looked and looked at quail cage designs.  It seems no two are alike.

I like the battery style cages that you stack upon each other the best.  I can't seem to find a good "blueprint" so it looks like I am gonna just have to wing it unless one of y'all knows where one is online.

One of the things I can't seem to figure out from looking at all the pictures and videos is how tall does the slot at the front of the cage have to be to let the eggs role out and not allow the quail to escape.  If one of y'all could answer that for me I sure would appreciate it.

Any other tips or tricks for a battery style quail cage would be very helpful.  I have built some rabbit cages, but this is just a little bit more complicated.

Thank you.

I don't know if you have seen this thread on the forum.  MoonValleyPrepper has done a great job of documenting his quail projects.  Some of the pictures are pretty detailed.  I'll bet he would be glad to answer any specific questions if you PM'd him.

This post has some good links.  The Prezi presentation is awesome.

Z raised around 100 Coturnix quail for many years in battery cages. We will have them again and raise them in this way and a tractor experiment. I will see if can get some pictures for you of his empty setup. They were cute little birds. I liked them, but I don't know alot about them, Z is the expert.

I keep my quail in three different cages, a quail tractor, a loft over my talapia pool and a rabbit hutch style cage.

I hate to see anything live on wire its entire life. I try free range most of my critters, of course this isn't possible with quail, so I tractor them. One thing I have learned though is that quail are pretty dumb. My tractor has an enclosed house but I lost some quail because they were standing outside next to the wire and a young cat pulled them through the 1/2" chicken wire piece by piece. Once that cat was shot I have not had another problem, but it is something to consider. Even chickens have enough sense to move once their neighbor is dismantled.

Any simple cage or tractor can work for quail. I would suggest  building a bird trap built into what ever design. Accidents can and will happen where the birds will get out. But they still want that cheap easy meal so they will come back home to get a meal. So build a wire cone near the food to allow the birds to get back in but not out. Kinda like a minnow trap.
