Town being evacuated in Hawaii
« on: October 27, 2014, 08:07:39 PM »
There is no going backmethinks, as lava creeps within 100 yards of homes. Authorities said late Sunday that lava flow on the Big Island of Hawaii had picked up speed, advancing about 170 yards since 9 a.m. and moving at a rate of about 15 to 20 yards an hour. The flow that has been threatening Pahoa, the largest town in the mostly rural region of Puna on the Big Island, began in June. It’s been moving toward town in fits and starts for weeks, speeding up and then slowing down.

I flew over that flow about a month ago. It was not something that you could see move so I guess it made it hard to visualize.
Let me upload a few photos and I'll post them here.

Sorry about the photos there not up to my usual standards, but I never shot from a helicopter before.
So it was a lot to get used to. Vibration, windows, glare, ect.

This is the leading edge of the new flow.

The source I think.

A recently opened skylight.

Looking back towards leading edge.

Thanks for sharing the pics. And even though those people need to leave their homes, there is one day.. millions of years from now.. be new real estate.

Another thing that I'm a little confused about.
Most of the houses in this area were fairly small bungalow/ ranch looking structures. Most are elevated on legs because of the termites.
They would not be that hard to pick up and move.
Maybe the owners are looking for an insurance payout? If the owners are native Hawaiian they are entitled to a parcel of land. So i'm assuming they can get a new plot.
They have some system there of a 199 year lease for 199 dollars or something like that.
