what is the optimum barrel length for a 22LR?
« on: April 25, 2015, 05:49:47 PM »
Does anyone know the perfect barrel length for a 22?  There are so many diff lengths.  I mean perfect length by, what length is the most efficient with velocity?  Cause if it is 16.5 then I would bother with anything else. Or if I can get more velocity out of a 22" or 24 " barrel I would choose that.

Thanks

Matthew

You are over thinking a .22... long barrel, if over 10 inch.

.22 boils down to the quality of the ammo.

Buy high grade ammo..

In my experience the typical 22 long rifle ,40 grain bullet begins to slow after 16 to 17 inches as powder combustion is complete and pressure has begun dropping by that point ,the longer barrel may aide in noise abatement but little else...Check out RIMFIRE CENTRAL where many of the best shooters in the world discuss such matters.

My experience lines up with Carl's, with the exception of the hyper-velocity ammo.  There seems to be enough powder to use a couple more inches.  I can't see any advantage going over about 20" regardless, and even at that point, you are probably making the rifle too heavy for what  it is, unless it is for some sort of formal competition.  One of the great things about the 22 is the light little guns it allows.

My 14 inch barrel has muzzle flash with all standard rounds of 22,more with 32 grain hyper velocity rounds ,
though little or no muzzle flash with TARGET/Standard velocity and subsonic ammo.
The 10 inch has flash with all of the above ammo and a good bit more with the hyper velocity ammo.

These are single shot (no cylinder gap,no slide motion relieving pressure) and that's about all the attention I ever paid to the subject besides the tiny groups downrange...minute of squirrel accuracy is pretty good for me.

Tip for shooters . The AGUILA 60 grain 22 ammo is ,at 50 yards,a 900 feet per second SLEDGE HAMMER. I don't feel
under gunned with my tiny Walther TPH and this ammo..over 100 foot pounds of energy (compare to 32 acp/just behind 380)

As far as the optimal barrel length goes:
Most Ruger 10/22 have a 18.5" barrel. (The current models do range from 16.12" to 20")
The Marlin Model 60 has a 19" barrel.
The Henry Classic Lever has a 18.25" barrel. The Henry Golden boy has a 20" barrel.

So, it must be about 16.12"-20".  ;)

Very little is gained, velocity-wise, above a 16 inch barrel.  Longer barrels may be a bit more accurate with iron sights, as you'll have a longer sighting plane, but you won't get much more oomph out of anything past 16 inches.

Looking at that chart, you really don't see a lot of improvement past 12 inches or so with most ammunition, but then you're in SBR territory, and it doesn't really seem worth the hassle and tax stamp to have a rimfire SBR.

I like bolt guns with 18-20 inch barrels and semi auto's with 16-18... keeps the packages around the same length. I do have a remington bolt 22 with a 20 inch barrel on it (I think) and that is so quiet and fun to shoot, I can plink away in the front yard and not even bother the wife or sleeping kids.

my Savage MkII FV-SR is exceptionally accurate - 16.5" barrel

my custom built 10/22 has excellent accuracy - 16.5" barrel

I can't image needed anything longer

Seems like a reasonable assessment.  Then decide based on need. Is weight or maneuverability a concern?
