What are essential HT antenna accessories?
« on: March 25, 2015, 11:42:27 AM »
As I get more experience in the ham radio hobby and with emergency communications, I've observed there's a number of different antenna connectors and combinations in used across different HT models.

Most commonly you see BNC, SMA male, SMA female, etc.  In addition you may want to be able to connect all of those to conventional PL-259 style coax.

Starting with the popular BaoFeng HTs, that feature a MALE SMA on the radio side, here are some items that seems prudent to have on hand:

Code: [Select]
item                                          example link                                                        cost notes
improved rubber duck antenna         http://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Nagoya-NA-771-Updated-Antenna/dp/B00KC4PWQQ $17
female SMA barrel couplers         http://www.amazon.com/Bluecell-Female-Coaxial-Adapter-Connector/dp/B00QPPQRR4 $7 qty 4. interchangeability with antennas
female SMA so-239 pigtail         http://www.amazon.com/DHT-Handheld-Antenna-Baofeng-Quasheng/dp/B00COKNKS8 $7 connect to standard full size antenna
male SMA to female BNC                 http://www.amazon.com/Female-Adapter-Antenna-Pigtail-13/dp/B007PPHUO2         $2 interchangeability

I like the versatility of the SMA barrel ,and SMA (Female)to BNC ,and SMA to SO-239
as that allows most ANY antenna to fit. Also you are better served with a magnetic mount
mobile antenna than an extended hand held antenna .
The radio is much more improved by a proper ground plane and even as portable
one can borrow a trashcan lid /air conditioner /auto/ most any metal object to enhance communications.
You would have to be pretty deep in the woods to not have an object to plant your antenna on.

For less than $7 shipped I got the following:

2x sma female-female barrel https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007POCWD2
1x sma male to bnc female pigtail https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007PPHUO2
1x sma male-male barrel https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007POCITA

They are likely arriving via slow boat from China, so delivery is around 1 month out, but I don't NEED these immediately, but seem darn useful in a pinch.

In my kit I already have a BNC male to so-239, so I can hook up "real" coax with pl-259 to an HT with BNC.
These new items will just about cover every combination I'm likely to encounter.

It also helps to have skill as in knowing how to have the best signal and take advantage of surroundings, like the parking garage I would use for weekend Ham radio operation in years past.

All except the radio was acquired for less than $20 and gives me a lot of options.

I may need to hookup the baofeng to a strange antenna or perhaps vice versa.

$20 will buy you a small village in China....and I find the quality of their hardware is variable ,but most often good to great.

In particular, that SMA to UHF connector (coppery looking cable on the left) really opens up possibilities.  Good job, Smurf!

I got that 2meter rollup thrown in with a second hand mobile rig I bought.  It certainly works, as I was able to a hit repeater 35 miles out I usually cannot reach with an HT.
I hung the antenna up outside with good success.

SCW - sorry I didn't take a good shot with the BNC connections in action.  I'll remember that next time  ;)

This kit will be in my EDC backpack I carry into work.  A little effort to rig up, but it packs up well.
