How to score lines on pVC pipe?
« on: August 08, 2015, 12:16:54 AM »
I need to mark or score two exactly opposite lines on a PVC pipe running the full length.
Obviously a fixture must be used, but I am clueless how to...

See if you can find a PVC tube cutter

You set it snug and then spin it around the pipe. Don't tighten it too much and it will score without going through

Maybe snap a string line on it?

Make a quick center finding jig
This is marking a flat piece of stock, but it would work on a pipe.
Substitute the center nail with a pencil.

NICE.........
and even the nail will do

any thoughts on a jig to score the second line at 180degress to the first one? (other than eyeballing)

How about using a slightly larger piece of pipe with two holes drilled in it and two pencils. Then just slide it down the pipe.

Or just drive 2 screws into it if you just want to score.

OK, say you need a pipe scored 180 degrees...

If it's a 1" diameter pipe then cut a piece of scrap wood a hair under 1/2" and screw on a razor blade.

Screw the pipe onto a plywood word surface.

Run the razor sled down each side.

Not "machinist accurate" but it maybe close enough?

My best guess given constraints...

"IF"... You can get one straight line down one side then just measure the outside diameter of the pipe devide thwart by two, then starting on one end of the pipe measure around to the 180 degree opposite side and mark it. Move to the other end and do the same. Next draw the new straight line between the two points.... Does that even make any sense!?

You could even just use a piece of string and experiment with finding the equal distance around the pipe by going opposite directions.... ( clockwise and counter clockwise) making pencil marks until you find the "center " or opposite side .

I have no real experience doing this excact thing but I do work with my hands for a living and am always improvising strange things.

Good luck!

thanks for the tips guys....

things will be easier if I could trust myself to measure and split in half correctly, but past projects have shown that i don't.
And things are owrst, cos being left eye dominant i cannot drill perfectly vertical...I am total waste on this regard...

You need a doweling jig.

You make one straight line with a chalk line.
Then wrap a bit of paper around the pipe, marking where they overlap. Now you have an exact circumference.
Once you fold the paper in half and mark that you have an exact half circumference.  Measure that out and mark, snap another line.

Wish I still had it, but I made a marking jig some time ago that looked like this:
