6.4 earthquake near Anchorage Alaska just now!
« on: January 24, 2016, 03:52:53 AM »
I was getting ready for work when I felt the largest earthquake either I or my wife have felt, and we're both longtime Alaskans. Strong enough to shake the snow off the trees! Usgs says the epicenter was off anchor point about 160 miles away from me. Power is on in my neck of the woods near Regional hospital, can't say for the rest of the city. It was felt as far away as delta junction (that's farther away than DC is from New York!)

I ran outside since I was in my garage which has no foundation (or so I was told). Right at the end of the earthquake I heard a lot of popping noises out in the distance in the city. I'm scratching my head what those could be?

I'll chime back on here when I get done with my route, let ya know what I saw.

Some news on it

Scanner http://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/15468

The National Weather Service said there was no tsunami threat from the quake because of how deep it struck.

The power is still out in the south of the city. About half an hour ago APD stated no major damage or injury.

Down on the Kenai pen. there's a lot more damage, cracks in the road.

USGI "did you feel it?" Map reports the quake was felt in Whitehorse, in Canada, more than 400 miles from anchorage, farther than dc  to Boston.

You have had at least 33 aftershocks at this point, ranging from high 2's to mid-4's.

That is a big one!  The aftershocks will most likely go on for weeks with some fives and sixes thrown in the mix.  unless this is a foreshock, God forbid.  Then we could be looking at an eight or nine on the horizon.

You can sign up for texts and emails alerts from USGS too, for all over the world if you want or only above a certain magnitude.  I saw the alert for this one when I woke up this morning, though I'm way too far south to have felt it.

Yeah, the Northridge quake was finally settled on as a 6.7, and it was still the strongest I've ever felt, even though I was more than 50 miles away and on a different tectonic plate.  And I grew up in California, so I've been through a lot of them.

The aftershocks of Northridge went on for weeks and weeks, so be prepared for that.  Got to be more annoying than anything.  Glad you're safe.

The smallest one I have ever felt was 1.9. I know this as I was in the treatment room at work treating a dog, and I suddenly felt dizzy. I then looked at the clock to see how much past lunch it was. In the evening, I checked the PNW Seismec site as was my normal thing to do in the evening why I got home (we had the Spring Break Quake recently before that, so I was keeping tabs), and it was 14 miles from me at the same time I looked at the clock. I think if I had not been standing still on concrete, I might not have noticed it, but standing still, it must have done something to my equilibrium. So I think more people actually do feel the little ones, but attribute it to something else sometimes.

20 homes evacuated, 3 structure fire in the town of Kenai after gas leak. Also, my mysterious popping noises are explained, blown electrical fuses down the road from me.

Sunday morning's earthquake the largest since measuring equipment was set up in the 60s, possibly the strongest since the 1964 Good Friday quake (9.2)

In that area, yes.

If you look at the top 15 quakes, I think Alaska pretty much dominates.

Strong motion sensor array installed over a decade ago, for studying where in Anchorage the worst felt effects are, finally pays off. Unfortunately for me, one of the biggest readings was just across the street from my house!

If waking up in your bed to a strong earthquake isn't scary enough for you, imagine being on a dogsled on a frozen river forty miles from help when it happens.

I have been in bed for two earthquakes, the third one was a story for another day.. but I CAN imagine being on a dogsled on a frozen river.. and 2 miles away from help would STILL suck mightily. Even if there were spectators..... I hated river runs at the best of times.. My normal run would have been that very weekend that that happened as well. I have not contacted my friends to see if they had felt it.

I might not have mentioned this Russian earthquake, but for where its Epicenter was, and how it is connected to the recent Alaskan one. It was a 7.3. Jan-30 03:25 UTC
