New bed... made for prepping
« on: November 02, 2017, 09:02:56 AM »
I need a new bedroom set.  They are expensive... and I'm a bit crafty :)
My parents have a motorhome, and in the bedroom of it, the bed is made to rise up for storage.
Currently my (and my fiancĂ©'s) bug out bags are in our room, next to the bed.
This would allow for that to go under the bed, along with a ton of preps.

Has anyone done this?  In my head this is a really good idea.... I just wonder if when it's all said and done, it's going to be a pain in the you-know-what getting things in and out of... and if things just get forgotten.

Looks like the picture didn't post.  I'm not sure how to insert a picture the way that this message board has it set up?

here is a link..

Ikea sells a bed that does just that.  The bed is named "Malm".

There's a few varieties of Malm.  We have a different style of Malm that has four pull out drawers on wheels.  I know from trying, that #10 cans will fit in drawer if you lay them on their side (12-15 cans per drawer, but I don't have that many #10 cans to try it out).

Malm is (like most Ikea furniture) a bit tricky to assemble, but once you get it put together, it's really quite comfortable.

If you really are handy, Rockler sells the hardware.

Probably what I would do if I wanted one but I have a woodshop. I'd be picky about the wood, though.

I'm not much of a fan of IKEA furniture... maybe as a guest room, but not for my every day...

That kit from Rockler looks perfect, thank you!!
We have a woodshop of sorts in our garage also, I just wasn't sure where to find the right hardware.
Now I need to pull out the computer and get to designing it!

And, thanks Mr. Bill for correcting the pic!

DO your homework on fitting. More than one woodworker has been an inch short or forgot to properly roundover. Might be worth mocking in ply before a final fit. Or a 1/12 mock-up.

Rockler is a drug to wood people. Just go through their kitchen stuff and "add to cart". I bet you hit $5000 in 15 minutes.

Make it tall enough to fit 5 gallon buckets. I saw a storage bed in a small place made like that, very handy.

David - Oh I know... anytime we're near Rockler my finance has to go in... just to browse and dream lol

Mountainmoma - That's the plan! Since there would be no boxspring for this bed, and I'm used to a tall bed, I would need the base to be nice and tall, which would make the buckets fit great!  :)
PS - I've always loved your accomplished tea drinker and baby goat watcher tagline.  It always makes me smile :)

Not bad thinking material, thanks. I need to buy/make some new double bed...me and wife are still using the beds that I had in my studen apartment and they are slowly faling apart...they both have the storage space under them though, so we can't get rid of them and replace with a regular bed, as the space is filled with range/tactical stuff (range bags, chest rigs, plate carriers) and wool blankets (both for prepping, for living history and for daily use in cold season....yurt gets cold at night). So I've been thinking about such bed as pictured above...then I recalled a friend telling me how he and his wife had a bed made of banana boxes with a double size matress over them...the boxes were filled with stuff they packed there when they moved. Could be easily used for prepping supplies and it's much cheaper than anything.

Bed idea looks great. We don't have one. Currently have other storage.
And MM's idea about it being tall for buckets would be cool.

just now seeing this. Sure wish I knew about this when I bought a bed for the spare bedroom. I have a good 25 to 30 5# buckets and that would be a great way to store them.  Might just have to sell the bed I bought and do this. It would sure solve a lot of my storage issues as we are busting at the seems.
