Quote
Ann Marie Buerkle leads the agency ordering the recall.

"It's a product that a lot of people have in their homes, in their offices," Buerkle said.

The agency claims extinguishers with plastic handles and push button – or pindicators – can clog, resulting in a failure to discharge. Nozzles can also pop off with enough force to be a dangerous projectile.

There have been nearly 400 reports of extinguishers malfunctioning resulting in 16 injuries and one death.

"You're better off to have no fire extinguisher than a defective fire extinguisher," said former California chief fire marshal James McMullen.

McMullen says Kidde's huge market share makes the recall worrisome.

I went to the Kidde website as soon as I watched the segment on CBS. I have a number of fire extinguishers and I rounded them up and checked them against the list of those being recalled. As it turns out I have two of the recalls. I entered the information on the return form and was told to expect replacements arriving in 10 days to two weeks, with instructions on how to return the recalled items. Easy, fast and no cost to me. Not all of the Kidde extinguishers are branded as such; some are branded as Sears products. The main identifier seems to be if the valve/nozzle assembly is plastic, as opposed to metal. The majority of ones being recalled go back to 1973. You don't need a receipt or proof of purchase, just the serial numbers off of the label.
Please check this out! You can't afford to have non-functional firefighting equipment in an emergency! I was totally surprised to find that I had two "defective" units.

I thought you were not supposed to use them after so many years anyway, so I am kind of confused by the dates on the recall models.  Some of those are almost 45 years old.

I'm glad I saw this. I have one in my kitchen that I'm going to check tonight.

Bumping this up.

I received a notice form my RV manufacturer about the recall of the fire extinguisher in my camper.  I went to the Kidde site and checked the extinguisher.  Mine is covered by the recall.  I have a couple other Kidde extinguishers, these are not part of the recall.

Check your extinguishers.

I just received two new replacement fire extinguishers from Kiddie to replace my 10 year old ones that were covered under this recall. I was planning on replacing them anyway.

I did not look at any of mine but I don't think I have any without a metal handle.

I filled in the form on the 7th, and the replacement fire extinguisher was delivered today, the 12th.  Not a bad turn around.
