I dont know if this is going to be everywhere or if it is a California thing. The new drivers licenses in CA, starting this year, Jan. 2018, now come in 2 flavors, REAL ID, or regular. The "regular", default Ca drivers license is now the same as the one we issue for AB60 ( the ones we give to illegal aliens), same wording, etc... these "regular" ones, in the upper right hand corner say " Federal Limits Apply" . If you renew online, renew by mail, or do not opt to get a REAL ID, you will be sent this one with the wording in the upper right hand corner.

What they have not bothered to tell anyone here is that when they go to do a background check to buy a gun, they will not accept the drivers license with that " Federal Limits Apply " wording, and you will be turned down to buy a gun. I anecdoctally heard about this today, about someone who was turned down to buy a gun, and so came home and looked into it.

( As an aside, any of the new data on how many licenses issued in CA to illegal aliens after Jan 2018 are not accurate, as these licenses are now also the default license for citizens who did not bring the correct documentation, in person, to the Dept of Motor Vehicles to get the REAL ID compliant license).

This means that when they finalize our latest CA laws on ammunition purchases, you also will not be able to buy ammunition without a REAL ID. They are not letting people know this, and alot of people are just getting the default license as the travel stuff doesnt kick in until 2020, but the gun issues are in effect NOW. Of course, the old licenses work to buy guns, they dont have the  "federal Limits Apply" wording on them.

Federal Non-Compliant DL/ID cards will consist of:

All DL/ID cards other than REAL ID Compliant DL/ID cards including DLs issued pursuant to AB 60.

If you do not apply for a federal compliant REAL ID driver license or ID card, you will receive a Federal Non-Compliant card, which displays the words “Federal Limits Apply.” This card cannot be used to board a domestic flight or visit a military base or certain federal facilities beginning October 1, 2020.
Notice that our DMV site doesnt bother to tell you it also limits your gun and ammo purchasing rights.

The California DMV is having those who want to buy guns, and fly domestically, renew their Driver’s License to add an insignia.

If you have renewed your license earlier this year and have not physically visited a DMV to apply for a real ID, you’ll notice a stamp saying “federal limits apply”.

Since the beginning of the year, the Department of Justice  has made it a requirement to have a real ID to purchase a firearm, and for businesses like Pacific Outfitters , they’ll be looking for that gold bear.

This is from a news site from Northern CA, no where in this part of CA has any news agency bothered to tell people

update, as I wrote to one of the board members at my local club, and he provided me with this link :

It has come to our attention that DMV is issuing identification to lawful California residents that are identical to those issued to individuals who are unable to provide proof of their lawful presence in the United States. In other words, DMV provided ATF with bad information.

This means there is no distinction between an AB 60 license and a non-REAL ID, despite what the ATF previously attested to in communications with NRA and CRPA attorneys. As a result, California licensed firearm dealers are currently prohibited from accepting non-REAL IDs for the purposes of firearm transfers due to ATF’s current policy.

In addition, NRA and CRPA attorneys have received word from at least one firearms dealer that the California Department of Justice (“CA DOJ”) has taken the position that any license with the words “FEDERAL LIMTS APPLY” is not acceptable for the purposes of purchasing or transferring firearms, regardless of any additional language on the back of the license. This appears to be an unlawful overreach by CA DOJ because the question of lawful presence in the United States as it relates to firearm purchases falls directly under ATF’s control.
