Hemp batteries/super capacitors
« on: July 16, 2018, 08:54:15 AM »
Anyone else hear of these ???
I stumbled on them yesterday surfing YouTube. What amazes me most of all is that when GRAPHENE was discovered, the scientists who discovered it won the Nobel Prize and it was all over the news yet I've never heard of them. From what I saw, the potential is almost unbelievable if truly researched and developed.
I remember hearing a story some 15 to 20 years ago about farmers in the northern states complaining about the fact that it was legal to grow hemp in Canada, but just feet away from an imaginary line, it was illegal because it was US territory. They touted facts like 1 acre of hemp could produce as much paper pulp as 100 acres of trees, but the big timber industry was lobbying to keep US farmers from growing it because it would kill the industry !!! This was during a time when crop prices were at all time lows and farmers were looking for alternatives to the standard "Cash Crops" in order to survive.
When one looks at all the uses for hemp fibers that have come about even with the governmental stifling, it makes one wonder what all the uses this plant could be found in an open and unrestricted market place.
As a child growing up on the family farm in Illinois, I remember playing with my brother in a patch of weeds that grew every year in the feed lot. The hogs had paths tromped through the weeds where they would lay in their shade. It was much later that I learned that the weeds were "Hemp", aka Illinois Green or Ditch Weed. I learned the later term came about because the source of the hemp was the US Government !!! Turns out the government had planted hemp in ditches and fence rows for a source of hemp fibers during the war. Most was killed out over the following years from newer farming practices, herbicides, and the fear that the property owner would be arrested for growing "Marijuana".

Enough of the rant and trip through memory lane. Just wanted to put the information out there and see if anyone had any more information. If you want to see for yourself, just Google hemp batteries or hemp super capacitors or search YouTube. Maybe you'll be as amazed as I was.
I know this isn't a source of energy, but rather an energy storage medium. This would open up huge possibilities for the storage of renewable energy source like wind, water, and solar making them much more viable for an "Off Grid" option.

Here's some links to what I was talking about. I highly recommend the "Why Kentucky farmers are quitting tobacco and turning to hemp" video, it adds a lot of credence to my earlier post.
