Moving everything to a new server (sometime soon)
« on: October 04, 2020, 12:59:10 PM »
Jack has a new guy handling his servers, and the entire Survival Podcast universe is getting moved to a new server sometime soon.

There's some chance things will break (especially older things, like TSP Forum).

Archer and I won't be directly involved with this, although we'll try to be available to give the new guy advice and scream in anguish if there's a disaster. 8)

If I find out the timing, I'll let you know.

SHTF
Server Hitting the Fan

Hope it is not too bad. I have done that and it usually leaves a swath of broken everything.

are you saying I need to backup the interweb first?

Good luck, remote backups are your friend.   If they are using VM's it can be an easy task, the latest version of VMWARE has some nice new features.

Sounds like the move will start tonight.

We do currently have automatic backups every 24 hours.  And the old server will be a backup for the new one: everything will get copied and tested before the old server is finally shut down.

I believe he's going to move one domain at a time, so when Jack's blog at thesurvivalpodcast.com goes, the forum will go along with it.

If I get a heads-up in time, I'll put the forum in Maintenance Mode before the move (which means nobody except forum admins will be able to login).  I don't have a lot of time this week to help with the move, so we might be in Maintenance Mode for a while.

The move won't be today -- he'll be doing testing first.

Testing you say - the place that good customer service starts.

If you need help let me know and I will order you a pound of the finest buzz beans around.

Oh, dark chocolate covered espresso beans.

I figure if they move services to a new IP the DNS move might take some time.

That seems to take a few minutes to a few hours nowadays, rather than 1-3 days like in olden times.
