My New Capital One Savings Account! What's In Your Wallet?
« on: August 30, 2009, 08:34:57 AM »
Alright guys i've been fed up with my savings account only giving me 0.05% monthly. in my opinion that's not even worth the time. my fiance's step mom works for Capital One and she told me of a new savings account that started 3 weeks ago. by keeping 5000+ dollars in the balance i am now getting 1.5% monthly interest. now the lady i went to talk to (not my fiance's step mom) at another capital one gave me the go around denying knowing anything about it. only until i got furious with her for trying to take me for a fool did she "SUDDENLY REMEMBER" what i was talking about. don't let them screw you. hope this will interest someone.

There are good deals out there if you look.  I just switched from my regional bank to a credit union who was offering 5% apy if I do direct deposit and have 6 debits a month.  I do this anyway, so I get a free 5% each month and they gave us a free $20 starter fund for my newborn!

WARNING! THIS IS AN OPINION ONLY...!

Go local, check the rates.  CapitalOne is EVIL.

Read the fine print, and be aware of what you are getting into.  If you don't want your money tied up where you can't get to it, don't let them sell you on a high interest rate that sounds too good to be true!

Just today my wife and I signed on with our local credit union for a new checking account...4% APY if we...
  • use online, rather than paper statements
  • have at least 10 debit card uses per month
  • direct deposit one of our payroll checks
  • visit their online banking site at least 4 times a month
Seemed like a no-brainer to increase savings from 0.15% APY.

What did I miss?

18% on a consumer savings account on $5000? I agree with aeellis2002 - triple check the fine print, something is not right. In this economy? Something's not right. Even as a loss leader.

When it sounds too good to be true . . . .

But for the time being, if they are paying 18% - good on you!   ;D

I just opened up a new account at Wachovia. It's a special savings account where they take a dollar each time you use your debit card or online billpay. And they move it into the account to give you savings.

Credit Unions are good alternatives many have excellent rates should you need a car loan if you don't have enough cash. It's amazing that banks are showing record profits but they are not sharing with consumers.
i have a good interest rate but my bank wont let me drop my rate unless i pay points and fees. yet someone who missed payments they will! It shows being responsible doesn't make you a winner!

mother-in-law manages for that bank. it's legit. just have to keep the balance above 5gs. good for me indeed!
