I didnt exactly "buy" anything or do any standard preps today... but me and my GF decided to stay another year in our tiny apartment to save money and pay off debt. We had planned for a while to move somewhere bigger (and more expensive), but decided today it was a smarter idea to redecorate as best we can and stick it out for at least another year.

Just decided to pull the trigger on a Big Buddy heater from CostCo. One of the better prices at 119. I am not sure if it is the latest generation, but I do need to get some additional heat in the garage during the winter when I decide to work on the lathe. This hardware will work as a short term emergency heat source. It has the standard built in carbon monoxide sensor, so while it's safe - I would never leave the area or sleep with the h/w running.

I already have a few packages of the smaller tanks for Big Buddy Heater, now to find some quality adapters / fuel filter for the 30 gal tank(s) I keep outside for my BBQ.

Made a trip to the 99 cent store and picked up some first aid supplies for the bag, along with some misc stuff I thought might be useful.

Since my most likely problem is going to be a layoff in a couple of months, saving money is my big thing. I also cancelled a bank account that wasn't doing anything but costing me $5 each month and cancelled my gym membership that I never use.

Hopped onto 13 skills and have the ball rolling, met with some nice folks coming to visit their pup for the first time and talked for two hours about all sorts of things including how the got out of CA and THEY asked about prepping and i enjoyed indulging! Made a new video for you tube about incubating duck eggs(uploading now,be done by the morn lol) got some serious winter cleaning done

went and checked on the tank deicer / bred goats.. and now that we got all of the straw raked up we put all new straw down..

Will do, Hootie. As soon as I've actually done anything, I'll start an NVIS thread over at the ham board. Been in the middle of this in-town move for the last couple of weeks, been eating all of my time. But that's winding down now.

Back on topic, yesterday I installed spinskins on a couple of friends' bikes. (spinskins? review link: http://thesurvivalpodcast.com/forum/index.php?topic=33217.0) It'd be a tragedy if either of them had a flat while pedaling away from zombie hordes.

I did some YouTube research on dressing and butchering deer, put some mineral oil-coated eggs away in dry storage and experimented with my first loaf of beer bread. As a fledgling hunter who's never intentionally killed anything bigger than a yellowjacket, I have to say the field dressing video was pretty intense! I was uneasy (and a little queasy) at the beginning, but by the end of the video the predator in me was ready to take on the challenge. If the 20-year-old me could see me now!

Pretty simple, and I've tested it out to about 150 miles.

Dehydrated another batch of elk jerky while we were sleeping last night. It's coming out a little at a time this morning as it's done. I tweaked my recipe from last time and oh man this is getting good.

nothing glorious today...I just sharpen the serated knives in the house.

Nice... and thanks for supporting your local farmer.

When you start to smoke/cure, go to a large animal vet and pick up bovine spinal needles. We had this guy up in Canada buy them all the time and I knew he didnt have cattle. I asked him and he used them for injecting brine next to the bone in his hams.

Last night I hosted an evening get together with two families of preppers...and signed up for 13skills.

Today was a lazy day for me, and I spent much of it perusing the new seed catalogs that arrived via the post yesterday and planning my gardens. DH, along with three DSs, went out and cut a fence line through the woods for the new goat fencing. It was a bit slow going as they decided to cut some of the trees into firewood as they went along.

signed up on 13skills, need to finish setting it up.

started to change a flat tire on my bicycle so the wife and i can go on rides and decided to clean up the drive train... well... ended up needing some tools i forgot i needed (it's been 20 years since i took apart a bike). just ordered them on amazon along with other things that were needed around the house.

once the bikes are rolling it'll be one more way to get some exercise and spend time with my wife.
