did you guys have to go pick first ? Or just each bring alot from home ?

The other two ladies have an apple tree each.  I don't. In past years I've gone around the neighborhood asking folks to pick off their trees, but this year I was sick and didn't feel like it, so I bought 30lbs of mixed "utility apples" from a local stand for $15, then in another place two pecks of ginger gold "seconds" for $8.

Food preservation: Spent all evening making a quadruple batch of gypsy soup, left out the oil. It used a full pound of garbanzo beans, soaked last night and cooked this morning. Fresh picked the tomatoes for it, 8 or 9 cups of diced. Had a bowl for dinner, there are 14 pints of it in the pressure canner right now for the pantry. Leftovers are in the fridge for a couple other meals this week.

Took a walk around the property, checking for dry trees to take down for firewood.
Made a trade deal to get some parts for my Saiga, will cost me just some forging and carving.
Harvested first 8 apples from one of the trees I planted. Of course, birds have found them already and marked most of them with their beaks, so I'll likely just slice the apples for drying.
Ate the first cob of my Iroquise corn this weekend, it was almost ripe. Cooked it in campfire ash. Still hoping that some of the biggest cobs will get ripe enough to be used for seeds.

I've been rendering the beef fat from our 1/4 steer out in the shed in 3sliw cookers.  I got the butcher dudes to run the fat through the meat grinder for me. So much easier than running it through my little kitchen aid grinder.

Sorry to hear that, not sure what would I advice, as I'm still quite new to tree planting and I don't even know how your local environment looks. My usual troubles are cold winters and wild game that eaths the young branches and bark.

Bought some new canned stew for testing, might buy some more for supply if it's good.
Been at the junkyard, restocked my supply of lead and also found a nice antique mining pick there...good old forged material or even a prepared piece for making some other tool with a shaft. Axe, adze, mattock...

Where are you? What USDA zone? What varieties on what rootstock?

Missouri 6A zone. Apple country is north of here, just not here.
Planted 4 trees 5 years ago. No way can I remember what they were.
They all gradually lost out. Partially due to the deer munching on the leafs.

Last one would die out, then come back from the roots. Did that a couple of times including this year. Then it decided to go to apple heaven.

Supply run to town, some items for the storeroom.
Then peeled and cut apples for the dehydrator.

The other day my wife took the family to a neighbors house where we picked 3 buckets of apples, we would have picked more but didn't have more buckets. They're going to become apple chips, applesauce, and juice.
The doctor told me when I was born that my chances of getting out of this life alive were slim.

Cut and dried more apple slices. This will be ongoing as we have a small dehydrator.

Reviewed some storeroom items, things we need to increase, which is mainly long term supplies of Augason Farms.
Those items having been fluctuating up and down lately.  Seems Walmart is mimicking Amazon.com lately.  ::)

Just make sure they are dry is all I know. We have some on the shelf that are a year old that are excellent. I just ate one.  ;D Just dried and vacuum packed in mason jars is all we do.

Forged a new nail-heading tool for forging nails, works better than my old one. Forged a set of door hinges for a neighbor. I didn't make many hinges yet (just one set for a chest and one set for my yurt door), so this was good practice.

 8) 8) That takes some skill I would imagine.  How small do you make them?

These were quite small and simple, 1-piece hinge (6" maybe?) on a nailed pivot. I've made bigger 2-piece hinges for my yurt door. I want to get into hingemaking some more...but I do want to get more into forging many items, while I'm stuck in forging knives and tomahawks all the time :)

I've cut down some dead trees yesterday to cut them for firewood, but then had to quit as my wife got sick and I was taking care of her. Then stayed awake for most of the night, feeding the woodstove to keep her warm. At least I carved a little canoe cup meanwhile, that got sold within minutes after posting it on FB. So, carving practice and profit, not a bad night.

Helped take down a huge, dead tree yesterday, and my reward was getting 2/3rd's of the wood for firewood. Nasty old elm tree, not the best wood but it will due for the shop.

I just made my yearly dry good order from a local whole earth store.  Twice a year when there are big sales on, they allow their customers to piggy back on their orders to get a better discount.  Right now I just order smaller versions of what I have in deep storage.  Right now there is no easy way to access Azure Standard for those items.

This time it was oatmeal, potato flakes, wheat, and a few other odds and ends.  I re-package these items in smaller 1 gal buckets or heavy mylar bags.

I'm back in gardening... the garlic is up and about 6 inches high... I planted turnips and rutabagas and the sprouts are beginning to come up. We have a fairly mild winter here, so should be able to get greens for salads for quite awhile, as well as the veges in the last part of the year... Don't really like cooked turnips and rutabagas that much, but they grow really well here and are good eaten raw.

Since it is too late for a full-on garden, I am busy composting and readying the beds for spring planting.

Gathered pecans from our trees... they are just starting to fall. They really don't do much until after the first hard freeze, but I am gathering what is coming down now, little by little. It should be a good year.
