Ha! Man, it'd be worth the trip to Massachusetts just to see the Ig Nobel awards (of which this device was a worthy recipient)! Too bad 2010's event is already sold out....

Too.  Many. Responses.  Can't. Choose. Just. One.  Mind. Is. In. Overload.

On a more serious note, is each cup a face mask?  If I'm out with my wife and we suddenly need masks, are we both covered with just her one bra?

On a brighter note---At last, husbands finally have a legitimate excuse to run around with their wives undergarments on their heads!!!!!!!!!! ;D

I even heard NIOSH changed the standard for these. It went from the normal N95 to 36DD.

Oh man, too too funny.  I can see my husband doing this.  Perhaps a conversion to no lace would be best.   ::)

I want one…at least to check it out…

it's less expensive than most bras even at Victoria's Secret...
with multi purpose, 2 facemasks, nursing bra, strapless options…
not too shabby…

I would skip on their T-shirt reading "Emergency Bra, Under here"
no need to advertise…right

I'd really like a more thorough video demonstration of use... and the transition from bra to mask.

Or perhaps it can be used in place.... just place face... oh nevermind.

That is too funny, cause when I was listening to one of the older podcasts and they were talking about masks, that's exactly what I thought of in case of exposure to anything where you'd need a mask instantly.  And I just thought I was being my usual silly self.   :o

I found this youtube video helpful. This video in this article also demonstrates how it goes on.

What I want to know is what the "filtration materials" used in the bra are, as mentioned in the Youtube video. I'm guessing it's something like activated carbon impregnated cloth. I'm guessing it wouldn't be much more effective if any than holding a wet piece of folded fabric over your mouth and nose, but it is a hand-free version....

Too funny!  :D

well, I feel better about the invention.  she is sincere about why she came up with the idea. It wasn't just some cheese-head adolescent male who wanted an excuse to wear a bra on his head.....  And she is right.  Most women always have one on their person, and so, why not utilize it in an emergency.  get people to thinking outside the box.

I agree. For all the jokes, it is a very clever idea that could indeed be helpful in an emergency concerning airborne particulates.

I just wanted to know the same things I would want to know about any other respiratory protection gear...what's it made out of and what kind of protection will it offer me. As mentioned in the video, one expert says it will only protect against dust and smoke, and in his opinion is "more or less futile", though he did say any particulate protection is better than nothing. I'm surprised that the only mention of "filtration materials" that I can find is in a YouTube video...I'd think that would be a major selling point that they'd want to emphasize, but apparently not.

I think it would be taken a lot more seriously if they began emphasizing the safety mask aspects of it such as the butterfly valves for breathing and getting certified to the same standards that other masks are.

Its probably no better or worse than a sleeve or other fabric, just make sure it fits tight in an emergency.... fit for non-emergency is up to the wearer.

For the record, though I joked about it a bit, I think this is a good idea.  At least it's something that is on women most of the time and ready to be used if necessary.

While I wouldn't make one out of a jock strap, building one into a ball cap for men might work. ???  Don't know.

While that's fine for women who are, like, a c cup; I don't know that it would work for those of us who are... um... well proportioned...  Also, for those of us who are on the smaller side. An a cup pretty much wouldn't cover half your mought and a triple D or E cup would cover your whole face! There seems to be a lot of issues here, and frankly, I'm not sure it would be any more effective than just holding some cloth over your face.

I don't know. There's definite comedic value here, but as for actual emergency use? I'm unconvinced.

I hate to ruin the fun, but why not just tuck a couple of N95 masks into the custom made carrying case?  Course, those little tin nose pieces in the N95's wouldn't be too comfortable, but probably no more unpleasant than a nipple ring.

I am sorry but I just cannot let this one go. I am a guy to start out with so please bare with my thought process. If you take off your bra and share half of it with a guy because of the air being unsafe to breath you might be creating another monster. He will likely run into walls and trip probably breaking bone because he wont be able to pay attention to where he is going with ladies going commando all around him.
I quoted you because I couldnt resist commenting on the thinking outside the box. You couldnt be more accurate. His focus will a bit North of the box javascript:void(0);:excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited:

Seems to me that a C-cup would be ideal, a Double-D would be way too big to do anyone any good, and a Double-A would only be adequate for a newborn baby. (And most of us would be hard-pressed to find a woman who only just gave birth to a baby and yet still only wore a Double-A.)
