From Lt. Col. Dave Grossman’s book, ON COMBAT, (page 31) the following chart outlines the relationship between your heart rate and your performance level when aroused under stress.

NEVER expect to operate at your “personal best” when aroused. It has been my experience that you will sink to your most practiced and recent – trained response.


When your heart rate increases, everything is effected-

Your nervous system gets overloaded

Your perceptions and mental processes will most likely become skewed

Your reaction time and situational awareness may be interrupted

To manage and combat this deterioration, it is essential to train consistently in those skill sets you deem critical to your survival.

Always look to keeping your heart rate at an acceptable level and use controlled <Autogenic> breathing to assist if possible.
