Title: 40 mile range with 5 watt handheld (homemade antenna pic)
Post by: UnderTheRadar on February 28, 2010, 11:31:35 PM

I've been looking for portable ways to extent the range of my Icom T90A.

I made this 2 meter quad antenna from plans and stuck it in the air up on Palomar mountain.  I hit a repeater 40 miles away that normally is way out of range.

The trick with any radio is to put your $$ and time into the antenna.  This one collapses and can strap to the side of my BOB.  Sorry for the poor photos.  The sun was going down and my phone camera is limited.

Great job Many many enjoy building antennas, No question, higher gain will go more miles. Better antennas, and feed line. will always do better. Nice looking Home Brew

Anything is possible when one station is high enough.  Work a satellite and you can claim 150+ miles on an HT.  Height is always your friend, unless you are falling from a high place.

As been said many times  2 meters is all about Hight, above average Terrain, antenna Gain , power out  feed-line and the obstacles between the two points we want to talk.

Here in michigan the land is so flat that I regularly talk 40 miles to most of the good repeaters, with my 50 watt mobil  But if there is a big hill in the way I would not be able to make it 10 miles.

Thats why I like 80 and 160 meter HF is nice,( as a back up) Just bounce over the top of it. and still good for local Q-SOs
