Title: pipe bomb exploded next door to my sister
Post by: theBINKYhunter on December 10, 2013, 06:57:52 AM
and this is why we prep, stories are a little vague, but here are some links:

the bomb (they think it was a pipe bomb) went off in the unit next to my sisters. she was sitting in her living room when shrapnel hit the wall below the window where she was sitting. from what the cops told her they think a crazy ex boyfriend is trying to get the attention of his ex and he decided bombs were the best method.

she's fine, shaken up, but fine. she's the one who called them both in. sadly no one took her seriously about the second call (911 all the way to the officers on scene). when someone finally showed up and they saw evidence then the place got put on lock down.

this just goes to show that you really do need to prepare for anything. it may not be a job loss, it could be something as crazy as a neighbor deciding to blow up a building. thankfully this guy is seems to be an amateur and didn't really do too much damage.

she crashed at my place last night, and i think this will be a good opportunity to suggest she put together a BOB. she had to go back to her place to get some things and she was able too, but what if she hadn't been able too? i think this will be a solid way to suggest something simple like that.

crazy.  My best to her, and hope she is not psychologically damaged too badly from this.  PTSD is not a predictable thing.

I am so happy she is ok.. and happy it didn't hit the window or her.
Maybe you can start on a BOB for her as a Christmas gift? Just a pack/duffle and the basics. With a list of what the rest she could put in for suggestions.

...sadly no one took her seriously about the second call (911 all the way to the officers on scene)...

:banghead:  How can someone NOT take a bomb report seriously?

Heck, even around here (small urban area, southeastern WA), someone makes trouble with pipe bombs every few years.  It's just not that uncommon, unfortunately.  I don't know what they use, but I do know that some pretty gigantic fireworks are available on nearby Indian resevations, so DIY bombs should be fairly easy even without access to a jar of black powder.

I always wonder what type of "pipe bomb" they are referring to. A lot of times it is a PVC pipe stuffed with reground firework filler. Not harmless, but not the sort of thing to cause mass casualties either. Then there are the more garage terrorist variants that put out penetrating shrapnel.

And yeah, not taking a person seriously when they call in that a bomb just went off should be on the spot fireable for all concerned.

I get what you are saying, so don't take this the wrong way, but I know a guy who made a pipe bomb using PVC and fireworks.  He was too close to it when it went off and it did some pretty horrendous damage to his left thigh, pelvic region, and belly, with tons of little pieces of plastic.  Took three surgeries to get them all and he was in a lot of pain for a long time.

Yeah I had some pretty foolish school acquaintances, and used to sit next to a guy at work who lost a lot of hand function from playing with that stuff. The explosion and plastic (or paper for the guys that use carpet roll tubes) can do a lot of close up harm even without the intentional shrapnel. Separate PM inbound.

I hear ya.  The guy I referenced wasn't even holding on to it.  I think it was something like 20 feet before it went off.

Warrior, I'm glad you sister is ok. Shaken but not hurt. She was lucky she wasn't outside for the show.

Many of the new "Pipe Bombs" are of the Plastic "Bottle Bomb" Variety. there has been a string of them around my town and the county for over a year and no one has been caught yet. They are a dangerous variety of gas bombs in a soda/water bottle using drain cleaner but packs a punch like a fireworks/gunpowder bomb. You don't see much of the old school threaded pipe and end caps (AKA Reese from Terminator Style)

:banghead:  How can someone NOT take a bomb report seriously?

pretty much my thoughts.

i still haven't heard anything new about it and there are no new news stories. i don't know if it was a 'fireworks' version or something a little more put together. my sister did stay at her place and seems to be doing OK, her roommate is there so not being alone helps her out.
