Title: 55 miles contact on 2 meter repeater with Baofeng HT !!
Post by: Antman on August 02, 2017, 07:18:27 PM
Wow,,, this feels like my first contact!  I hit the repeater, that is 55 miles line of site away, with a Baofeng and a homebrewed Slim Jim antenna tonight! I joined the nightly rag chew and came through clear and readable! It is even better that it was a 6 dollar homemade antenna too!

Great night, just wanted to share with you all,,,,

Good work on making your own antenna and a good range repeater contact.

Good job, Antman!  55 miles is some serious reach!

BTW, have you seen the APRS-based VHF propagation map?  Here's the link: http://aprs.mountainlake.k12.mn.us (http://aprs.mountainlake.k12.mn.us)  It'll tell you when things really open up and you can reach out for hundreds of miles on occasion.  Just don't look at it when you can't get to your radio, because a sweet band opening will drive you crazy then.

Fantastic.  Elevation and antenna make all the difference!

I did a similar range VHF contact once, but with a more powerful mobile radio.  It's amazing when your station and the repeater are both at high elevation with a large body of water between the two :)

Very nice contact!

Hot air ballons often use APRS to track position.  I have had numerous text message exchanges with them.  Longest direct contact (not digipeated) is 121 miles with yaesu ft1d handytalky at full power (5 watts).  Funny thing about 2 meter aprs is that you often want to lower your antenna height so you arent causing packet collisions in other areas.  Turns standard ham operating procedures upside down.  A friend of mine actually relocated his antenna to other side of house so that roof blocked transmission to a redundant wide area digipeater.

The International Space Station orbits at over 200 miles high. And one can reach them pretty easily when it is operational.

Agree, that is awesome for voice!  Any chance you know what type of of setup they have?  Save for mountain based repeaters, that is quite an accomplishment.
