Nothing against you guys, but...my paranoia won't permit me to publish my call sign because the FCC, God love'em, will damn near tell you what color underwear I prefer if you do a call sign look-up.

I hear ya, I pretty much screwed myself already though.  If one knows where to go find it they can find enough to do some damage.  I'm counting on the fact that very few but HAMs would actually know where to go.  False hope probably, but not much I can do about it now.

Hi, Robert from MO!!! You got yours in March!!! Good Job!!!

Ya'll really can have the FCC restrict your personal information, the private sites that archive the data as well will remove it if you ask.

This thread has piqued my interest in HAM radio. My father tried to get me into (although he was not into it himself) when I was a teenager but I gravitated to more 'interesting' things instead....now I am finding a more practical interest in becoming a HAM again. Alas the local internet searches have yielded little. Texas A&M has a club but for students only and the Bryan chapter website is nonexistent. Anyhow, maybe I will find a way to get into it. Keep up the great posts!

I just passed my TECH test this weekend- Feb 7, 2009.  Scheduled to take the GENERAL test on March 14.    Husband isn't interested in getting his but I am
the prepper in the family and I thought this would be a great addition to the communication prep.
I can't believe the general public doesn't take the stories to heart about people WALKING in the ice storms to the local law enforcement office to find out
where the shelters were.   This was after only two days- no preps in the house, no heat and NO way to communicate after the cell and land phone didn't work.
ARRGGGG.....

I aced my Technician test last week.  Call sign isn't in the FCC database yet.  They let me take the General test while I was there, and I only missed passing by 2 questions.  They said to come back in a month and try it again.  ;D

Now I just need to learn more about which radio to buy...

Congratulations on getting your tech ticket.

What kind of radio do you think you want to start with...mobile, base or HT?

Thinking either HT or mobile.  Possibly find a modest HT to get started, listen in on conversations, learn the ham language and culture, use it as a glorified shortwave receiver, etc.  Then start building a higher power go-anywhere briefcase kit if that looks feasible.

Eventually I'd like to make my own radio out of parts.  Sort of like how a Jedi makes his own light saber.  The circuit diagrams that I saw at the library assume CW knowledge, so I'll need some time to learn that too.

Or I could do something entirely different...  I'm open to ideas.  I just don't want to mess around with backyard towers and high-dollar gear, and I'm not quite ready to do anything permanent to the car.

By the way, I'm in the FCC DB now.  8)

I have one of These (http://www.yaesu.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd=DisplayProducts&ProdCatID=106&encProdID=F111F6B21D7F46EDD122C1706B70F543&DivisionID=65&isArchived=0) in my Jeep.  I'm very pleased with the performance of the radio.  I did an install write up on putting it in my Jeep Here (http://thesurvivalpodcast.com/forum/index.php?topic=1266.0).  Don't forget, most mobiles are very adequate base radios as well, especially if you're just starting out or don't want to invest a lot of cash in a mega expensive base type radio.  A nice dual or triple band mobile radio would make a fine base radio as well.

I bought two of These (http://www.yaesu.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd=DisplayProducts&ProdCatID=111&encProdID=7A3213027D790BCFC558E51B3306C192&DivisionID=65&isArchived=0&currTab=tab_Description&currDiv=DescriptionDiv&ExpandID=0,Description) for my wife and I.  It's a nice little HT with lots of features & it's water proof also.  It's been a good performer & is easy to modify, should one want to.  I can hit the repeater in the next county over from me with it.  It's probably 15 or 20 driving miles from where I live.

I bought them from Austin Amateur Radio Supply (http://www.aaradio.com/cartfile/yaesu/VX170_a19.html).  They've been a really good store to deal with & have the cheapest prices on these two models of radio that I've been able to find.  I had the radios two days after I ordered them.

One of the nice things about HAM radio is the unlimited variety.  You can do just about anything you want if you have the diligence to sit down with a few books based on your interests.

i am interested in getting in to HAM. my grandfather has a couple radios and most of my extended "adult" family members have their general...
i am not really close to any of my extended family, but my recent inquiry has brought at least me and my grandfather closer. I am hoping to pick up some information from him, but also from you guys...and gals.

i am really interested on a "beginner kit" for HAM radio.

if anyone can help, that would be great.

HAM is in my heritage. i guess, my great uncle..or great great, i am not even sure, was  a HAM wiz, and could decode morse, while holding a verbal conversation.
he was in communications, durring WWII.

besides learning the ways of HAM for my own interest, i think it would bring me closer to my family, which is another goal of mine... any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I took the Extra right after.  Failed, but on the better half of 50%.  Not too bad for a stone cold shot in the dark if I do say so myself.

I'm not going to wait 5 years for my next upgrade like I did this time.

Next up is a radio.  I'm thinking FT-897 for the base/mobile/backpack utility of it, not to mention the fact that it does all bands from 160 meter to 70 cm.

That's pretty good for winging it.  I took the General at our regular meeting the other night on a whim, knowing I wasn't ready.  Missed it by just a couple of questions.

The FT-897 is a nice radio.  We use one at our local club, actually we have several but that one gets played with quite a bit.  Pretty intuitive to use too, though I haven't used it quite as much as some of the higher class licensed members.  Sounds like a good choice if you only want to go with one radio to do everything.

My Kenwood TH-F6A arrived yesterday.  Now I'm trying to figure out how to use it.  Weather and broadcast radio bands were easy.  Shortwave, no results yet.  After scanning the 2M band today I stumbled across a repeater where some guys were talking in spanish.

Ordered a programming cable, which should be here before too long.  I think it'll be a lot easier after programming frequencies into memory.  Also I'll need some kind of antenna adapter so I can play with shortwave too.

Hard to believe a place with a name like "radio shack" doesn't actually have any ham stuff anymore...  The guys working there saw the radio on my belt and got all excited even though they didn't have anything I felt like buying.  Apparently they're not used to customers who know anything about electronics (this is in a mall) and thus they're desperate for intelligent conversation.

My current bedtime reading material is the ARRL General manual...

new to ham, I have only had my license for a couple weeks.  My wife and I both took the class this winter and passed the Basic course with honours (in Canada that gives us access to ALL bands)

I am currently studying for the Advanced, which is quite intense and allows you to build your own radios, not just assemble kits.

My set up in the office, soon to be in the BOV and I will run a VX-8R HT in the house and use the cross band repeater for greater power.

Extra class. Been a ham since 1995. I've had a blast with ham radio. Work about all modes, all bands. I also listen to a lot of shortwave radio. Since I started playing with radios and computers I've cut my TV watching nearly to zero. I wonder how much of the degradation of our society should be attributed to television?

Here's a question for the HAM HF'ers out there:

Which HF shortwave bands will likely get the most voice traffic in a major national or international crisis? Why?

Thanks.

Here's a question for the HAM HF'ers out there:

Which HF shortwave bands will likely get the most voice traffic in a major national or international crisis? Why?

Thanks.

Wow, this is a tough question.....perhaps tougher than you know. Here goes:

It depends on the time of day, and the location/size of the crisis.
In general, lower frequency bands during the night....higher frequency bands during the day.
EXCEPT that you are more likely to hear LONG RANGE signals on higher frequencies....more "local" signals on lower frequencies. Yep, probably got you confused now.....let me just give you some bands to listen to:

Note....your radio display may be calibrated to show Khz (Kilo-Hertz) or Mhz (Mega-Hertz). 1000Khz is equal to 1Mhz. So the same station may read 5.070 on one radio, and 5070 on another.

International Shortwave At night: 4.7Mhz - 5.1Mhz, 7 - 7.6 Mhz, 9.3 - 10 Mhz.
International Shortwave during the day: 9.3 - 10 Mhz, 11.5 - 12.2 Mhz, 15.1 - 15.9 Mhz, and 17.4 - 18 Mhz.
I skipped some bands that are very lightly populated with stations....in fact, on some "official" international shortwave bands I've NEVER heard a station. Remember that International shortwave stations transmit with LOTS of power....this means that power sources must remain stable for them to HAVE the power to transmit a signal. Here's a link for some current shortwave station listings: http://hfradio.org/english/

Now as to what I said about long range stations coming in on higher frequencies....for example.... on the night time bands I've listed, you are more likely to hear more distant stations on 9.3 - 10 Mhz at night....and local (USA and Canada) stations on 4.7 - 5.1 Mhz, and 7 - 7.6 Mhz.

Now for Amateur Radio (Ham) night time bands: Local USA and Canada 3.6 - 4 Mhz, 7.125 - 7.3 Mhz.
Amateur Radio Day time bands: Still get local USA/Canada on 3.6 - 4 Mhz, and 7.125 - 7.3 Mhz...but add 14.150 Mhz - 14.350 Mhz for BOTH localish and long range stations.

A couple of important things about receiving amateur radio signals: 1: It takes a radio with a BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) to receive SSB (Single Sideband) transmittions...and Hams use SSB for voice communications. It can be goofy using the BFO on a cheap radio...so a little practice beforehand would be good/GOOD/VERY GOOD!! 2: A LOT of Amateur Radio Operators have backup power sources....this means that if the availability of electricity is scarce, you are more likely to hear signals from Amateur Radio operators than you are to hear big-time International Shortwave Stations.

The location and size of any potential crisis is pretty important as to WHERE you should hope to find stations. If it is a GLOBAL major SHTF situation, you are most likely to find signals in the Amateur Radio bands....because a lot of hams have backup power. If it is a regional type situation...for example....asteroid strikes Frisco Texas (Thanks for the memories Jack :) ) and takes out the central USA, then you would expect to hear some info on the international shortwave bands. If localish society remains somewhat in-place don't forget to check the regular AM band....you can hear AM stations from several states away at night on the AM band.....again, they have to have POWER available to transmit a signal.

Among the minimum equipment you should have available for the reception of info over the radio. Obviously a RADIO....preferably a AM/FM/SW (Shortwave) radio with a BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator). Get one GOOD radio....and then buy a cheapo and throw it into a metal container for storage (without batteries in the battery compartment please....as they may corrode and destroy the radio). You will need some way to provide power to the radio....lots of batteries....small solar system....kid on a bicycle generator....whatever. There are small solar panels designed to charge small batteries for use in portable electronic equipment. Here's one for AA batteries from Ready Made Resources... http://www.readymaderesources.com/cart/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=1202  . And a simple 30 foot long (or longer) wire strung up between the house and a tree for a external antenna can help immensely.

Even if you don't have the money to spend on the whole shebang....go get a cheapo radio from Radio Shack, and stash some good batteries for it.....you'll want to have SOME info won't you??

I hope this answers "some" of your questions. There are a lot of ifs/ands/buts to this topic.

Thanks!  I was excited.
Sorry no rubbing intended.  I took the first two tests a couple weeks ago, and have been patiently waiting.  I have an unfair advantage on the tests.  I learned all the technical stuff years ago in college in my physics and EE classes.  I only have to study the "rules and regulations" sections.
Where I've been dragging my feet is on the hardware.  I need to figure out what to do for a radio.  I really wish there were stores I could walk into and look at them.  I kind of want to look at rebuilding an old tube style, but I also just want to get up and on the air.  A walkie talkie style just doesn't do it for me so I am probably going to start with a low end 2m rig.  But I really want to work on my county wide DX skills for use as an emergency communications device.

Expire Date: Aug 14, 2007
Date of last Change: Aug 14, 1997

If this is the date on your license, you're still within the two year window to send in your registration & stay licensed.  You need to get it done though.

Go to the FCC Universal Licensing System (http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/index.htm?job=home) page & you should be able to find the information to get reinstated.

What is the YI9HD?  I just got my license and I'm still trying to decide on a radio.  So I have no practical knowledge, sorry if it should be an obvious question.

thanks

The YI9HD is a callsign for Iraq. Apparently, the fellow operates legally from either Iraq or the US. It's not uncommon for a fellow to have more than one callsign IF he travels internationally......although an Iraqi callsign is somewhat more rare because of the obvious situation in Iraq.

Yes as we speak I am in the big sandbox...just south of Baghdad! YI9HD is my Iraqi call sign.

I have not been active much where I am now because I am sitting right next to the FOB power generation plant!

About 50 Cummings gen sets wired in together....I have 30 over  S9 noise! I will be moving to the north soon and

hope to operate when not outside the wire.

I am on echo link some.

Any chance of setting something up so fellow TSP'ers can work Iraq?  I can always hear the middle east stations (Iraq, Oman, UAE, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, its just hard to compete in a pile up with guys running 1500+ watts into stacked mono band beams.

Hey Newb, question for ya:  Is there any way that grampa can give you that 2m radio now?  You'd be able to start listening in, and figuring out how to use your radio.  Believe me - you will learn WAY more by using your radio (even if you can't transmit on it yet) than you will when you earn your license.

I was just thinking about you and your ambition to get your license, and I was thinking that it'd be awesome if you could at least monitor the winsystem repeater.  It would inspire you to study faster!  :)

Na, my grandpa wants to put it out there as an incentive to get my license, plus i would feel like a greedy little F*cker if i asked, only because they have been so generous lately. Every time i leave there, my car is full of things like mason jars to hand tools, they even through in a dehydrator. Trust me, i want that 2meter, and i want it now. I will get my test done ASAP.

thank you for thinking of me though. It would be great learning exp. but like i said, i dont want to seem greedy.

Just passed my tech this past weekend. Waiting to show up in the DB. I have a nice collection of gear that I got found on craigslist for a very reasonable price.

Icom 2340H with voice synthesizer.
Alinco DR-1200 VHF radio.
Yaesu FT-90 with detachable front panel. Dual band VHF/UHF.
Alinco DJ-191T – handheld radio.
MFJ 259B HF/VHF SWR Analyzer
MFJ 4225MV Switching Power Supply
Uniden Grant XL AM/SSB Mobile CB radio
And a goodie box filled with: coax switch, large external speaker, microphones, coax cable, jumpers, manuals, antennas, electronic parts & connectors, and a complete ham radio library.

I've added a mobile Diamond antenna and a nice dual band vertical for home also by Diamond. I just bought 100' of RG-213 and some connectors from a buddy of mine for $50, just need to get it run, get the antenna mounted, the cable run and show up in the ULS DB, then I'll be good to go.

- and jpommer - it would be totally rad to have a little net.  I was/am seriously considering getting my very own repeater, making it private and hooking it up to echolink specifically for this purpose (so's I could talk to my TSP family whenever the heck I wanted on MY repeater).  You can do that right?  Hook it up to echolink AND have it remain private?

Howdy all,

Just passed my Technician and General tests last night.  Should be in the db and have my license in about 2 weeks.  I'll post my call sign then.

I have an FT-897D and a Hustler antenna.  Need to get the antenna up and I will be good to go.

Got my Novice ticket in 1959.  Modified some military receivers to work 40 and 80M and built a small 1 tube transmitter.  Didn't work to bad.  Never went any further (13 wpm code was tough, and the theory questions in those tests were killers).  Passed the Technician in 1972 but never bought a radio or went on the air.  By the time I thought I would really like to set up a station, my Tech license had long since expired and was well past the renewal period.  This time, I purchased the radio first, so that I would have that pressure to pass the test.

Now I just have to convince my better half to get her Technician license and we will be set.

I'll finally going to be able to do HF bands.  I purchased a Kenwood TS-520S radio on ebay.
I kept added $10 each paycheck to paypal when possible and making bids.  I fully expected to be outbid
on this one also.  Including the $30 shipping it came to $155 !  Yea!
Now I just have to wait until it arrives.

I purchased a Kenwood TS-520S radio on ebay.

TS-520S ... I've had mine for over 25 years.  It still works fine except for the sidetone for tuneup and cw.  I have to switch it to VOX, press and hold a touchtone on my HT, and place it against the 520 mic to get a tone for tuneup ;D

Good dependable, radio and fair price shipped.

FYI, since the receiver is solid state and runs off 12 volts, in the absence of 110 volt power if you only want to monitor, you can make up a power cord for it that will allow it to work off 12 volts receive only.

Yea, Kenwood knew what they were doing when they built rigs in that era.  I downloaded the Operating Manual as well as the Service Manual from kg6haf.com already.  I've been reading and re-reading the section of tuning up.  I'm from the transistor generation, grid dipping etc will be a new experience.   They sure don't make owners manuals like that any more, schematics and all.  I love pre-'no user serviceable parts inside' technology.

Laser,

For "dip and load" practice, what you might want to do is get a 100 watt light bulb (incandescent if you still find one), and solder a PL259 connector to it with a couple of short wires, and use that for a dummy load.  It's a little easier on the finals until you get the hang of it, and you'll get visual feedback of your result by the intensity of the light.

You may already know how to do this, but to quickly tune up:

Meter switch to "RF"
Mode switch to "Tune"
"Drive" knob for max receiver noise (you won't get much noise from a dummy load)
"Load" knob about midrange
Then:
Flip switch to "Send" and quickly "dip the plate" which means to adjust the "Plate" knob for max RF (which also coincides to minimum plate current with the meter set to "IP")

Unitl you successfully "dip" the plate, the finals draw a lot of current so try to do it within a few seconds to make your finals live a little longer.

When the mode knob is in the "Tune" position, it not only gives you a tone to tune with, it also reduces the screen voltage on the tubes to make the tuneup procedure a little easier on the tubes.

Once you are "dipped" (in resonance), you can increase the Load control in increments, re-dipping after each increase, until it won't show any further increase in power and you're now loaded to max power (as shown by the lightbulb brilliance, the RF on the meter, or the max dip on the plate current on the meter.

When the finals are lightly loaded, the plate control will produce a very pronounced dip, and as the load is increased the dip will be more shallow.

One of the handy things about these old Pi-Net tube radios is that in emergency, unlike a solid state rig, is that they will "tune" into almost anything without an antenna matcher (tuner).  It may not be very efficient to load up the sliding screen door on your patio as an antenna, but it will probably work.  My very first contact was when I got home from school in the 7th grade, and opened my new Novice license was from to Hoyt Lakes MN from Shreveport, LA with the screen door as an antenna with a Heathkit DX-40 ( http://www.rigpix.com/heathkit/dx40.htm (http://www.rigpix.com/heathkit/dx40.htm)).  You'll see it has pretty much the same controls (plate, load, and drive) as the 520.

Sorry, I got carried away and went down memory lane ;D

Kermit

122 hams checked in here!  I know there's at least one other who hasn't checked in yet.

I wrote 'em all down with call signs and class so if the Mods want I can list 'em all here and start a "Survival Ham Club".  Maybe we can get a tag added to our name that shows every time we post so the other non ham forum members can ask "what's that all about?" and motivate them to take the test if they want!

What'ya think?

122 hams checked in here!  I know there's at least one other who hasn't checked in yet.

I wrote 'em all down with call signs and class so if the Mods want I can list 'em all here and start a "Survival Ham Club".  Maybe we can get a tag added to our name that shows every time we post so the other non ham forum members can ask "what's that all about?" and motivate them to take the test if they want!

What'ya think?

In my experience, you can take the 2nd exam for no extra charge, depending on the group.

You may as well go for it. The worst thing that could happen is just coming back to repeat it.

Worst case scenario, you will have experienced taking it once and will feel more confident the next time.

Either way, I'm sure you will walk away at least a technician tomorrow, right?!

Did you have something specific in mind? A certain brand or certain features? Or are you more like me and just want the best price?  ;D

Do you want just a 2-meter rig (about $130 to $150 new) or a dual band 2m/70 cm?

New to TSP and the forum.

I've been an extra for a few years now. but I mostly know VHF/UHF.  I have various dual-band HT's and mobile rigs, including one D-Star HT.
I'm hoping to escape my HOA and its antenna restrictions and get onto HF later this year.

Relatively new the to board. I have been a ham since 1977 still learning. I run a 2m/70cm rig in the truck and a IC-7000 around the house. No HOA so my antennae are in the pasture.

WMD would be great ending however I have not changed mine since I was a novice.  xxxSCK.

I got to play with one of those a couple weeks ago and wasn't too impressed.  For my .02 cents worth, I like something like an Icom T2H.  Under $100, and you can get the AA battery back for it.  I use NiMH rechargables in mine and replace them each spring.  In the long run those AA's should be a whole lot easier to source than the battery that comes with that radio.  Your mileage may vary.

as a trimix diver, I've been looking at that pic and hoping they have a hoist to get the rig back on the boat, although with that much gas the diver could probably drop the fins and walk it back to shore on the bottom.

On a serious dive with my rig I weigh in at almost 400# climbing up the ladder after the dive is no fun at all.

Technician class here - a "baby" ham - guess that makes me a piglet? :)

Hope to get up to General class later this year (too much on the plate to concentrate right now).  While it's tempting to stay at Tech level, I read this the other day (on a 4x4 board) and realize I have to go up a level or two...

Quote
Quote
...don't get me wrong, the 706 is the big dog unit with power galore, do i really need it when it's going to see 2m repeaters and simplex 99% of the time?

prophetic - answered my own question this weekend.

what do you do when you're stuck in a campground with a blown transmission and no cell service or FM repeaters within range? jump on 14.300 and start calling CQ, make a contact in Ontario Canada, who relays my info to an Intercon controller in New Mexico, who calls in my AAA membership number to 29 palms. tow truck arrives 30 minutes later.

Sure I could've hoofed it to the Highway with my 7 year old and possibly flagged down a Ranger after waiting all day, or tried to hitch a ride into town, but 10 minutes worth of radio work on 20 meter and a tow was rolling.

lesson learned.

No, it makes you a ham.  Not a piglet, not a tech lite, not a general lite, not an extra lite, just a ham, like the rest of us.  Welcome to the hobby.  Try not to take it too seriously and have a blast!  I look forward to working you on the air sometime.

Absolutely. Many people are content with getting their tech license and the tech license does provide a whole lot of access to a lot of the bands.

Its always great to expand onward and upward with the other two licenses but don't feel like you just have a "driver's permit" there. You can do a whole lot with a tech license!

Congratulations!

I lived in Summerville, North Charleston and Mount Pleasant over twenty years.

The dive shop was off of Rivers Ave. where North Charleston turns into Goose Creek. Its out of business now.

I got certified in a dive shop off Rivers Ave in the late 80's. I don't think it was as far up as Goose Creek though. Was further down back towards Chas.

I have been looking at the post and seems that many of you have no preference as to what radio system you use FRS,MURS,GMRS, or CB I think that is great as we can always communicate with some one during a crisis. I have many of my CERT people who do not have their  ham ticket but we are able to communicate bimonthly as a group on what ever system they have.   I monitor all the frequency's and am Net control for every body.

OK, I used to listen all the time; way back in the 60s we had a Zenith “TransOceanic” model 8G005Y…….tubes on a battery and real heavy.
Now I would like to get into broadcasting (ham), but what I read here it sounds like a different language.
I was thinking of buying a receiver, but then I thought why not buy a transmitter, they can receive all the stations also (right)
So is there a good website or book that will guide me as to what I should buy, I would like a mobile unit; I have heard that Yaesu is a good brand.
Any feed back would be appreciated

tmbrwolf, getting your ticket is not that difficult. I recommend you get the ARRL Technician class manual and study it. As you study use the eham.net and qrz.com practice tests to gauge your progress, these both use the actual test pool. Yes we have our own language but we're not an exclusive bunch and the technician class and general class tests are not that difficult, if you are a math whiz or electrical engineer the extra class won't be too tough either. I am neither and the extra class book is kicking my rear. Once you are handily passing the practice tests, like with a %90 or better every time, look for a club in your area that does the testing. Most clubs are open to the public and very willing to help an aspiring ham so attend their meetings and don't be afraid to ask questions. Amateur radio is fun and rewarding, especially if like building things. There is a hefty serving of satisfaction obtained from throwing a homemade wire antenna over a tree and talking to people around the country and/or the world.

If you plan on testing before June go ahead and get the general class book as well, this will get you privileges in every ham band. Most VEs, volunteer examiners aka the guys running the test session, will let you take the general class test on the same fee if you pass the tech. You could walk out with your Extra class on one test fee, that's $15 dollars at our sessions,  if you wanted to. The general class question pool will change in June, IIRC, so if you won't be doing it before then just wait and get the new manual when it comes out.

As to what radio to buy, yes! I just sold my Icom IC-7000 because I don't have the time right now, but it is an excellent mobile HF rig. I have used a few Yaesu's, both the 857 and the 897. I like the 7000 over both these, the menu system is a little better, but they are all solid performers and the Yaesus are easier on the wallet. As you look around and get acclimated to the world of ham you will get a better picture of what exactly you want to do with it and that will help determine what radio to purchase.

That's due to this section being a ham specific board, that being our preference. Since amateur radio has allocations in or very near the same bands as the nonlicensed frequencies we get similar performance characteristics, actually better but that's mainly due to power, antennas and infrastructure. Many do it with ONE radio. I do think there is a use for the other systems and CERT is a great example of why these are important. The OEM in the county above us is running a technician level class to get more of their CERT members licensed, I think this is the way to go.

Here's a quick rundown of the services you mentioned
MURS (2m)- 151.8200, 151.8800, 151.9400, 154.5700, 154.6000mhz
2 meter ham band 144-148mhz

FRS/GMRS (70cm) - 462.550mhz-467.725mhz
70cm ham band 420mhz-450mhz

Citizens Band (cb) (11m)- 26.965mhz-27.405mhz
10 meter ham band- 28mhz-29.700mhz
12 meter ham band- 24.890mhz-24.990

They work great as receivers. There are better receivers out there but many of those cost as much or more than the radios you are looking at. Because this isn't really the right thread for this conversation I started a thread in the gear reviews and the how to. Feel free to ask any questions in those or start a new thread in the ham board.

I stick to the 2 meter band right now.  I have the desire to upgrade the ticket and get in on the HF action, but I don't have the desire to spend the money its going to take to get a decent rig to do so!

You are the second HAM operator I've encountered who arranged a remote automobile rescue through his radio.  For those of us with the Tech license/2m band we have to rely on nearby repeaters when in remote areas, but those with HF capability can do some amazing things! (the other guy was in SoCal, contacted someone [in Canada!] with HF who telephoned someone for him locally and got a 4x tow truck in motion).

I studied for and passed the Tech license test a couple of months ago and bought a Kenwood TH-D72 dual band HT to celebrate.  Mostly I did this because I've noticed in Los Angeles that even the slightest local trauma pretty much shuts down cell service for a while, and I don't like being unable to communicate.  I also wanted to brush up on analog electronics, a skill which atrophied as I focused on digital electronics and software.

I'll usually not post my call sign on internet sites as it's directly linked to a public database of home addresses.  Not that I believe that there's any real anonymity on the internet, but I don't need to make it easy for scofflaws.

I've started to study for the General test but it's 100x harder than the Tech test and it's hard to find a block of uninterrupted time to cram this stuff into my short term memory.   But I ultimately want to get a high-end mobile HF rig set up.

I got my license to make emergency communications when all else goes down and had planned on making friends near where my children live to aid in communicating with them and also to help others who need to communicate with loved ones. When the economy turned we lost all and had to move. Just got through paying back a 5 year bankruptcy a year early, so I guess it's getting better. All I have is an HT Yaesu FT 270. I would like to make a better antenna but have nothing to tune it with so I wouldn't dare transmit. I'm also interested in being able to do packet an computer communication. Where is the best place to learn? I'm a Master Electrician and Electrical Contractor if I can help anyone with anything. Also solar.
Thanks
Rog

Extra Class for about 10 years.  Summers spent homesteading and winters are for radio contesting (Yikes!).

For those studying for general or extra class and having trouble, check out hamtestonline.  I've helped several people with marginal technical knowledge pass using this resource.

Just a heads up to all the tech class people here.. There is a band on 10m that is available to voice contacts for the tech class. And it is starting to open up. Made a contact from MN to CA the other day on it. 1600 miles. Fun to be had ;)

10 meters can be awesome!. During the past 10m contest (10-11 December) I contacted Guam from Wyoming with what I thought was 5 watts. Then I found I had the wrong power level selected - it was 2.5 watts.

KE7AQB - tech

Got my tech license in 2004.  Mostly used for rally racing comm, but more or less out of that now.  More interested in SHTF comm now.

Got a Kenwood 2m mobile back then.  Haven't fired it up in years.  Might could do that sometime soon.

Just passed my Technician Exam last night.  I only missed 2 questions, only studied on and off for a week.  Not bragging though since I spent a year and a half in military electronics school to work on aviation comm and navigation gear.  It was more review than new information.

I just bought a 3 year old 2 meter mobile rig on craigslist for $100.  Looking forward to getting started.

I'm new to the forums, but my husband and I got our tech licenses a while back. My hubby has since picked up his General class and now that I am gainfully unemployed, I may start working towards mine.

I just looked up how long I've had my license. I thought it was maybe 2 years now, but it's been almost 3. My, how time does fly!

My boss is the one that gave us the kick in the pants to get started. He told me then that it could turn into an obsession very easily. He's absolutely right. I need to sell off more of the household non-necessities so I can buy more radios. *ahem* And other preps.   ;D

And now that I've looked up my call sign, I really want a vanity sign. One guess what I'll spend my day thinking about and checking on...  LOL

I'm going to take the test for my general license on Saturday.  I'm planning on getting my Extra also, but I'm going to wait until the new question pool is released, so it'll be late summer at the earliest.

I finally got my mobile VHF installed in my car and made contact in my front yard with someone through the repeater that is about half way between my house and the BOL.  My dad's house is easily within simplex range so we've just about got the comm element covered.

The problem (for my wife at least) is that I'm now becoming more and more interested in HF communications....which means more radios and larger antennas.  I'm getting interested in building an HF transceiver that'll fit in an Altoids can and runs off a 9v battery.  The kit only costs $29 and is only good for morse code, but it sounds interesting.

look into building your own antennas from speaker wire.  The general test has much of the info about building a half-wave dipole (468/wavelength to get you length in feet), but you can look online for plans others have made for building your own.   building antennas is a useful skill.  Look into an old used rig as a cheap HF starter.  I paid 325 for my almost 30 year old rig plus an antenna tuner.  Find a local ham club, look for a swap-net they might have. Yes, I agree.  I've found 2 different plans for building HF antennas. One is a dipole and the other is a vertical, both use speaker wire.  I hope to set up a dipole at the BOL and have one for the "Altoids" radio.  I'll probably have to use the vertical one at the house because of lack of space for the dipole.

Good luck on the test.  Hope you pass with flying colors.

Been an Extra Class since right after the change.  Was general before the changeover.  Had very good elmers who were patient and full of knowledge (two were "sparks" and had been hams for over 50 years).

I prefer a quickly made G5RV for HF.  Have used that for Field Day and personal use.  Is simple, cheap and good.

My son and both got our technician June 2011, at a Boy Scout radio event, and he won an Icom 2M Handitalk.  He is now studying for his General, as an independent study course ( home schooled) and is working local events with our County club. He is fascinated with Morse code- CW.  I have participated in some Rookie roundups to learn more about HF and RTTY. The local club is fantastic.  But my Yausu radio is smarter than me right now.  Local Ham convention in the summer was fun too.

Tech here.  I got my ticket about 6 years ago.  I got some hand me down 2 meter gear, got it up and running, taked to a few people, and put it all away.  99% of the traffic is talking about radio tech, road conditions, or weather.  I just had not time or intrest in talking to people about mundane stuff.  I would love to get back into it if I had a useful reason to communicate on the radio.

Got my Tech and General a couple of months ago after listening to Jack's Ham Radio podcast with Tim Glance (Old Grouch).  Years ago I was heavy into CB radios and had wanted to get into the Amateur side, but didn't have the time or resources.  The timing was perfect so...here I am.  I mostly concentrate on HF. Next month I am moving to middle TN and plan to set up a pretty comprehensive system.  For the time being I'm using a G5RV antenna with my FT-897D

Quick Introduction....

I have been an Extra Class amateur radio op for 10+ years and operating for almost 20.   My experience is extensive in that I have operated in most remote place in the world  www.bs7h.com and also served on local ARES Amateur Radio Emergency Service teams.

During Hurricane Katrina, I went down and helped with comms out of Hattiesburg, MS to help coordinate Red Cross truck deliveries.

Don't forget that you can (very easily - literally 10 seconds) get a full name and address using just a call sign.  I just thought I would remind people in case they missed the notice on another thread.

If you're fine with that, then it's all good.

The last test in the series is the VE test that lets you become a volunteer license exam person.

If you get the Cert now, it will automatically upgrade when you get your Extra License as well.

Hmm, that did sound like a question - here is the reference to the current General Class question pool . . .

G1D02 (C) [97.509(b)(3)(i)]
What license examinations may you administer when you are an accredited VE holding a General Class operator license?
A. General and Technician
B. General only
C. Technician only
D. Extra, General and Technician

[Added]
Note:  The local Ham group will only let Extra be part of their VE pool.  This group supports support the testing 6 times a year. It's a real nice group; offers coffee + donuts to folks taking their test.

Configurations!

I found it takes a good 7 - 10 days for the license to post.    The second test is not that much harder if you decide you want to talk "low" and far.

I started off technically being a ham earlier this year, I continued to goof off and a few months ago I was consider a general all around ham, and after being tested and verified by 3 different people I can be considered an amateur extra hammy sort of guy.

I guess I need to take the last "test" and become a VE qualified HAM with a bit of extra on the side.

About 4.5 months start to end from cracking open the first book to finishing up the last test.

Thanks A-G!

Budget for an HF rig right now is zero as I try to find out where it fits in the priority list.  As it moves up the list gets funds allocated, I'm liking something along the lines of an FT-857 or FT-897.  My elmer says he might know where there's an FT-100 I could pick fairly cheap, so ears are open there.  I like portable and flexible, and I'm not planning on being a contester or hardcore DXer.

I did get a good tidbit (actually, MANY good tidbits)  from the general class-class I just took:  "If you're buying a radio, and say you have a budget of $4000 for example...  Spend $3500 on the antenna, $500 on the feedline, and borrow a transceiver.  ;) "
Might have to start a new thread on that one, if there isn't an active one already.

Congratulations, Scoob!  Do you have your eyes on an HF rig yet?

You'll be one of the first to know. I think I'm going to string up a dipole oriented southerly (running almost dues east/west), so I should be able to bang out a signal in your direction.

Just lurking around looking for a good deal/estate sale on an FT-817, 867, or 897. I'd take a Kenwood or Icom as well. I just like the old school barebones feel of the default orange LCD from Yaesu.

My son & I passed our Tech back in 2011 with the Boy Scouts.  We joined our local county amatuer radio club, got an elmer, and worked a few events, esp Field Day.   That was the best because we could try out on lots of equipment.  My son is learning CW, and I participated in RTTY event.  Next step General for both of us. Helps to have another family member to learn and practice.

Hi everyone!  I wanted to introduce myself to the HAM community here.  I just passed the Technician test a few weeks ago and just received my call sign - KC3DDZ.  I live in the Reading, PA area and would enjoy talking to anyone in the area sometime.  Currently I'm only on 2 meters/70 cm with my HT but I can hit the Reading repeaters.

I've been reading this forum for a while now, thanks for all the good information posted here by everyone.  I've learned a lot!

Welcome.  I officially got my ticket the end of May 2014.  I got both tech and general, though I mainly use VHF/UHF so far.

I'm up in western WA, but you may want to look up "EchoLink" and see if there's a repeater near you.
In a nutshell, it uses the internet backbone to interconnect RF repeaters.  I've got one I can hit from my place.

See if there's one near you.  There's also smart phone apps that remove RF from your end, but you still require a callsign to use it.

I tried out the Zello TSP thing, and functionally it works ok, but it wasn't my taste.  I would very much enjoy a regularly scheduled TSP forum ham NET as local repeaters/clubs have.

So what if it's over EchoLink?  I realize we're geographically dispersed, but I value good community where ever I find it.

So what if it's over EchoLink?  I realize we're geographically dispersed, but I value good community where ever I find it.
+1 for an Echolink TSP "repeater"

I made a mistake on the web site for propagation information for HF .
the correct address is   hppt://car.uml.edu/common/DIDBase    This should get you to the section where all the cities are listed. You then pick your city of choice then the year. Then the last date in the Julen calender ( I think today is 193 ) then the time. Good luck

I believe I have the ability to pass the extra exam with enough study, but I haven't even used my general privileges yet.

Congratulations!

You aren't Frank Deford of sports writer/commentary fame are you? If so, it's an honor to share the forum with you - big fan. If not, it's still cool to have an Extra Class around. I'm with Gargamel, though... I haven't put my General through its paces yet.

Definitely pursue it if you're interested, but, I have found that I got the most radio bang for the buck with the General and the Tech licenses.  You get a little extra spectrum space with Extra over General.  I use it, but the main reason I would do Extra again is to have learned the material in the study guide.  I know, the study guide isn't the same as experience, but I still learned a lot and made better use of my HF privileges after studying up for the Extra exam.

Exactly my take on it.  The extra spectrum is nice, meh, but the material that gets covered is what made it worthwhile for me.
