Unintended Benefit To Comfrey Planted Around My Fruit Trees
« on: November 02, 2019, 05:13:21 AM »

Comfey has served a lot of functions for me when planted around trees, especially fruit trees. It makes a great ground cover which prevents weeds and retains moisture in the soil, it draws in pollinators when it flowers and provides habitat for other beneficial bugs and worms, it provides nutrients for the tree as it dies back and one thing it does that I didn't anticipate when I planted it is that it provides an insulation mulch for the roots and trunk in the winter.

All this and I think it looks pretty good around a tree too.

cool.  thanks for sharing.  I will try that this year for any fruit trees that are still alive come spring (the goats got to them this summer.  I cannot tell which they killed)

My concern would be keeping the bark at the base of the tree moist.  Could cause rot and kill the tree.  Keep a close eye on them.

It is something I have kept an eye on because I know that can be an issue with piling wood mulch up around the base of the tree but so far after a couple years there doesn't seem to be an issue. I believe the comfrey leaves allow a little bit of airflow unlike wood mulch.

THe picture did not come through on my end.  Would love to see.  I have been trying to get guilds going around my trees this last 2 years and comfrey is one of the plants that I do have at the base of most of my trees already.  Perhaps at divide time this spring I should put a few more in on each tree.

I do like the look of a comfrey plant after the second year they are green and full and lush.  We have seen that toads love it as a cover too.  Talk about your beneficial critters.
