Where to hide an apartment key?
« on: May 05, 2018, 08:26:13 PM »
Those of us who own/rent a house can find lots of obscure places to hide a spare house key.

What do you do if you live in an apartment?  No private land to bury it in, no garage, no shed.  Too many curious eyes watching you if you try to hide it on the grounds of the apartment complex.

Possibly you could hide it on your car (not in your car, because if you don't have your door key you probably don't have your car key either).  We have an old topic about this in the Transportation board: Hiding spot for spare key

I'm currently teasing a friend who just got locked out while walking the dog, but as I thought more about it, I realized that I don't have a good solution.  Any ideas?

Well, not a hiding spot, but a friend you can trust that lives within 1/2 hour could have a spare. We should all strive to find a friend or two we can trust.

You can have a spare locked in your desk at work or locker at the gym

After the divorce dad had a spare in his apartment mail box. Sounds odd but the mailbox could be opened with a paperclip. Basically he could break in to his apartment but you'd need to know the key was down there.

Also an option is to have a relationship with another renter in the building.

There is the other thing... find a key maker who will take a few bucks to copy an apartment key, cut off most of the brass, and put it in your shoe.

When I had an apartment I had a key pinned 30 feet up a tree I could climb. These days I'd rely on lockpicks.

Lots of options.

Bill, are you the holder of her spare key?

I vote for nearby friend or neighbor to keep a key for you... but I would probably keep a spare in the bowels of my purse (as I do for my car -- it is not a fancy one with the keyfob - just the cheap version that will get me into and start the car). There have been times when I have needed that spare. Since it isn't on a ring, I would only dig for it in this type of situation. But this wouldn't help for the dog-walking situation.

Perhaps she could get a phone case that has space for a spare key? Most dog-walking folks still take their phones along, so maybe that would work?

I keep spare keys (auto and home)  in the tongue of my shoe,in my wallet,in the key safe on my belt,on my dogs collar, under a bit of wood trim for my house, and up my radio tower on the pulley that raises and lowers my antenna for work/repairs. I have needed multiple keys in the past for different reasons and each key location is only known by one person. I had to take away the dog's key because she likes to party too often when I am out.

I keep spare keys in the other pocket of my pants. Unlikely I would have Both sets out at the same time.

Nope, I live many hours away.

I'm curious what subtle clue led you to determine the gender of the person involved. ;D

Yup, this was probably the first time in a decade that [he/she/they] went out without [his/her/their] phone.  There were actually people at home, but they were all either out on the back porch, or playing computer games, and didn't hear the pounding on the door.

We've hidden a key in  a flower pot in the past.  I've seen plastic cards that have a key blank built in that you have cut.  I never thought of putting one in the tongue of my shoe.

But the best option has been stated already, a friend that lives nearby.

At our old place on the ground floor, we had a broom we'd keep out on the patio for sweeping. It didn't look like it, but the handle was easy to remove, so we'd hide a key in there. It was really "garden level", so it was half underground and not really easy to see unless someone was standing next to it. Fortunately we never had to use it.

Couple thoughts.

1-Attach a key to the dog collar/leash. If it is only an issue taking the dog out, problem solved.

B-If allowed, do one of those over the door decoration holders and either tape/glue a key to the backside and/or hide it on/in the decoration.

III- Depending on parking situation. Hide on car.

I would hide it where oen woudl need a tool to get to it.
i.e. under the name/apartment number tag that is on the door, or (things being different here) θnder the keyhole/handle covering plate
