Essential Info
Why spend hundreds of dollars on an expensive security system when an ordinary telephone can keep an eye on your home for free?

That's awesome. I had a computer monitor with a built in infrared sensor back in the early 90's that I set up for my mom's office. The computer would automatically call or send us a page when a "detection event" occurred. We could then call in to our fax machine, punch in a code (silently as far as anyone in the office was concerned) and listen in for as long as we wanted.

A tad complex, and rather expensive (200 dollar fax machine, several hundred for the data/fax modem and special monitor) but the tech at the time required that a PC be in the loop to make the call.

This thing kicks ass.
