FTX Earl
« on: August 30, 2010, 12:00:09 PM »
Is giving me a chance to test my preps...

Earl has been blowing me for about 5 hours now. tropical storm force winds. Constant gusts, strong enough to blow you over if you aren't ready for it.
Supposed to pass about 50 miles north of us.
Of course, I'm onthe north side of the island...
Surfer's heaven right now, if the surfer is nutso. the ocean is angry.
If everything goes the way it should, we should be mostly OK.
Power has been off for a few hours. I'll keep on line as long as the laptop battery and cell connection holds out.
House is battened down. Hot as the inside of a cow.

I've been getting occasional updates via text message from my brother, who's also in the line of fire.  He's holding up OK, power's out, which means it's hot, but otherwise he seems to actually be enjoying himself.  He hasn't been in a hurricane since he was in elementary school, so he's kind of excited.

Hoping all goes well for you under the circumstances, ZGF.   Will be interested to hear your AAR after ENDEX.

Greetings, ZenGunFighter.

If you somehow have access, my kindest thoughts go out to you and yours and to all who may be in the path of Earl or any other hurricanes in the up-coming hurricane season.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes.
We are all Ok. Earl's eye passed about 50 miles north of my house. Strong winds, with gusts up in to the 80s-90s.
house ok, minor plant damage, middlin' size tree down on neighborhood road. Acaia. took a thorn in the thumb cutting it up moving it. Thumb stiff and hurts. :(
power came back this evening. Out for 4 and a half days, not a major deal. was able to pull water out of the cistern (25k gallons) for flushing and washing. Propane stove for cooking/heating water. ran freezer on 750 watt invert off car battery. managed to keep it cold enough to not loose anything.

more later. thumb hurts to type with. :)

Firstly - glad to hear you and yours are alright (thumb excepted!).  Secondly - kudos for coming through it all so well - very nicely done, ZGF!!

LOL - at least you won't be sittin' on it much! ;)

Glad to have you back on the boards!

Greetings, ZenGunFighter!!

I'm glad to hear that you and yours are still above the dirt (or mud, as the case may be) and that your preps on food and water held out.  Get well soon with the thumb.

ha! awesome! I'm in S.E. VA, and I got my pergola set in concrete and my solar panels mounted permanently just in time to flip the switch on my inverter (running my beer-fridge-on-the-porch) and watch.... absolutely nothing happen weather-wise.

Well, at least we know we can have cold beer during a power outage, right? ;-)

Glad it all turned out well for you too.
