a new survival skill i learned this weekend
« on: October 31, 2010, 08:31:36 AM »
This might be common knowledge to some of you guys, but I was never shown this before. I've been camping, hiking etc all my life and never knew about fat lighter. My brother inlaw showed me how to find fat lighter and use it. Then I had to google it so I could know why it works and share it with you all.

Its basically an old stump of a pinetree. The sap settles in the roots and stump and dries then becomes a great fires starter!

It is definately something good to know if you ever find yourself lost in the woods overnight or for a long period of time. It only takes a little bit to start a fire so a whole stump will go a long way.

We call that "pitchwood" around here. You can find it in most conifer type trees. Old decayed stumps that have been around for awhile are the best. I carry a small amount of it in my pack as it will light rain or shine. ;D

In my neck of the woods we call it "rich lighter pine."  It's great wish I had a few pieces.

Is that the same thing as "fatwood"?

Don't think it has to be a stump.  While camping at a park with my brother last year, they had trimmed some pine trees back.  Where the limbs had been cut sap seeped out.  Works just as well to rub that sap off onto twigs, grasses etc.
