Use your WiFi router as a mini heat mat
« on: February 20, 2012, 04:15:02 AM »
My first post here, so I thought I'd jump right in and post a cheapskate tip for those of us that don't need a full size heat mat, or simply don't have one.

Most of us have a WiFi router that is running 24/7 - pumping out heat that is otherwise wasted. My router has a surface temp of around 32c.
If you're careful about how you do it, you can use your router as a heat pad to germinate seeds.
Obviously moisture and electricity don't mix, so don't use a container with drain holes, and take your container outside to water it.
Also, allow for some air flow around the router - I stack about 1cm of coins under my trays to allow for ventilation.
Works for me.

First post. Go easy on me :)

Hello, Kerosene -- welcome to the Forum!

My cat also discoverd the amazing heating properties of my router -- and knocked me offline by making it overheat.  Not sure the stack of coins would work for my situation. 8)

Lol @ Archer

Great idea.  I wonder how many other heat sources from electronics can be used this way?

you just have to remember to give the equipment room to breathe/cool off. and keep ants out of it.

Kerosene, great idea.  I know my router and cable modem are both on 24/7.  For those of us that can't convert C to F in our heads, that's just shy of 90F.  (I'm one that had to pull up a conversion site to see what it was in F)
