This is the only song I had heard from Corb Lund before listening to the two you offered up.  He's pretty good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSIjDbCedY0

Try this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uASQgLwaIs

I know I've linked to it before, but it's worth repeating. Corb Lund is great IMHO.

Not really a theme song, but we had several people competing for most annoying song at work today. It started when one guy was whistling God Bless America. Someone else started humming Walk Like an Egyptian to counteract it, then later someone started singing I Know What Boys Like (or whatever that title actually is) to counteract that.

I'm thinking it's time to hijack the PA system on the production floor and blast some Backstreet Boys ;D

*Sigh* is there any current songwriters/singers with current themes on these topics? Last ones I knew were Pink with "Dear Mr President" and "Dixie Chicks"...  but the Pink song was 2005? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dear_Mr._President

You want current protest-y songs? I got current protest-y songs!
0. *THE* current protest song is I Don't Want to Be Here Anymore by Rise Against. Just released this year, topping billboards, showcases today's punk crowd's mindset, EXACTLY what you're looking for Cedar.
It's a pretty subtle message but it's pretty much about being fed up with the current bullshit system, "Your paradise is something I've endured," in reference to the fake American dream we've been sold. The music video is a lot less subtle and with a different message, covering ALL of the problems in the world, focusing on violence, and then equating guns to violence and being complete crap in that regard.
1. Satellite by Rise Against
Awesome song that's basically an anarcho-libertarian's theme. Also one of my old old favorite running songs.
2. Survivor's Guilt by Rise Against
Addresses the emotional trauma experienced by soldiers and how shitty the government treats them.
3. Listen to Rise Against!
4. Revolution by Nickelback.
Kinda cheesy. Nickelback sucks. But it's there and it's a thing.
5. Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell by Five Finger Death Punch
A bit more of a subtle message, again about veterans. They played this song for a Veteran's Day concert somewhere just recently.
6. Where Is the Love by The Black Eyes Peas? It's a pretty old song now but it's awesome and I figured I'd throw in something without screamed lyrics.
7. Bridges by Rise Against (y'all might be able to guess my favorite band by now)
Talks about the erosion of the middle class. Just released this year, how's that for current?
8. The Pride by Five Finger Death Punch
Basically a huge f*** you to American consumerism.
9. Another Way to Die by Disturbed
Talks about how we're destroying the planet and ourselves in the process. Freakin classic.
10. Land of Confusion by Disturbed
Another freakin classic. If you're not turned off by heavy metal listen to this song!
11: Here's a curveball. Diamonds from Sierra Leone by Kanye West!
It amazes me but Kanye of all people has a meaningful song. It's about the destruction the blood diamond industry causes and the responsibility people like him have in it.
12. Same Love by Macklemore
In support of gay marriage.
13. White Flag Warrior by The Flobots
Pretty much anti-war.
14. Rage Against the Machine
They're pretty old but they're still current. They're all protest songs basically.
15. Definitely old but The Hand That Feeds by Nine Inch Nails plays on the radio all the time. The protest spirit is alive and well among us rockers!
16. All I Want by A Day to Remember
Not EXACTLY a protest song, but it more provides a snapshot of how a lot of us feel about the state of the world. And it's just a good song.

Really Cedar if you can't find current protest songs either you're not looking hard enough or you don't listen to enough new metal, lol!

Now on the topic of theme songs. My theme song at this exact moment in time tonight is Forever by Papa Roach, and Thin Line by Macklemore. Because I'm a heartbroken sentimental 20 year old at the moment.
Normally my theme music is more like Savior by Rise Against to get me PUMPED or Miracle by Blackmill (give Blackmill a listen!!) to put me in a freakin awesome mood.

From RuggedCyclist: "You want current protest-y songs? I got current protest-y songs!"

Thanks for the list. I've listened to a couple so far, and like what I hear, especially "Wrong Side of Heaven", and will be listening to more. I think that's the main difference between these songs and the old songs - these are meant to be watched and listened to; the old songs were meant to be sung ("How many times must the cannonball fly, before they're forever banned? // The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind, the answer is blowin' in the wind....")

Then again, times change, the method changes, but the message remains....

Thanks RC -- and no.. I have not listened to music in awhile in the house other than kid songs, and my truck whip broke due to a door in that last windstorm.

Well today it was Lindstrom & Christabelle "Lovesick".

I can never go wrong with "Hypnotize" by the Notorius B.I.G.

But when I really gotta get things in gear, it's either Mozart's "Requiem" or Paul Oakenfold "Live from Havana".

Then again my favorite song is "Open Up and Bleed" by Iggy and the Stooges.

Yup; rap, techno, classical, punk... I love it all.

NSFW Paul likes women moaning suggestively but it could be the single best piece of electronica recorded. Where Mozart hit loss and hardship Oakenfold made a piece of ever growing intensity to mimic love and passion.

After half a day trying to avoid Mrs. s, who was wrapping gifts with some difficulty, including not being able to find part of a gift, trying to wrap oddly shaped items (like a "Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver"), I went shopping for her, by myself, alone, quietly. Or so I thought. Anyhow my theme song for today: [especially the choruses]

I'm definitely thinking my taste in music is different than most on this forum.

Theme song of the day.... Would probably end up being Five Finger Death Punch - The Way Of The Fist: http://youtu.be/pf5STiPnbBU

Probably not work safe, not child friendly, or if you don't like an f bomb or a dozen. I've been in one of those moods.

As the mood strikes me:

Five Finger Death Punch - Wrong Side Of Heaven: http://youtu.be/o_l4Ab5FRwM

Toby Keith - Beer For My Horses ft. Willie Nelson: http://youtu.be/o1JOFhfoAD4

I've just never been able to get into "protest music". I am just so picky about music I can never listen to 99% of songs, regardless of message. I was hell on the few cassette tapes I had because there would only be one or 2 songs on one that I would listen too.

The Garden Song by Dave Mallett
Inch by inch, row by row....

Smite us now, oh mighty SMOD!  Like crap from a giant asscrack, so wipe us from the face of the earth.  FreeLancer

OIL LADY'S DEFINITION OF A PREPPER: A prepper is someone who takes advantage of the monetary freedom offered by good economic conditions of non-wartime prosperity to stockpile for himself readily available supplies and equipment of a lifestyle-supporting nature. He specifically chooses to engage in such stockpiling during easy economic times so that when bad economic times eventually cycle around again, he will be prepared to engage in the self-preserving undertaking of riding out a lengthy period of scarcity of those same supplies and equipment without harming others in the process. The goal of the prepper is to be fully self-sufficient at all times --good times and bad-- without breaking laws or causing harm to others.

I've been listening to a lot of Chris Knight over the last few years.   I posted this in another thread several months ago, but will repost here.   One of the best "prepper" minded songs I've heard...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-u56CfaUBWI

In The Mean Time :

Sometimes I wonder where my next dollar gonna come from
Keep my head up and something falls ou
t of the sky
Daddy taught me how to use my bootstraps and carry on
He said God will be good to you son if you try

Uncle Sam comes around getting both hands in your pocket
People out there, just barely are gettin by
Render unto Caesar no more than you got to
Keep the Lord in your heart, and keep your powder dry..
But do you good in mean time
While you're waiting on a good time, draw the line.

Well you might wanna think about getting yourself a shotgun
You might wanna think about growing you a garden patch
You might have to go out and shoot something and drag it home
But don't never count your chickens before they hatch
But do you good in mean time
While you're waiting on a good time, draw the line.

I'm pretty sure that the government ain't gonna save you
The good lord helps the ones that help themselves
You wanna stand on your own two feet, and use some backbone
Don't go crawling on your knees, begging for help
But do you good in mean time
While you're waiting on a good time, draw the line.
Yeah in the mean time, draw the line.

Awesome!  Thanks!!!

A great album from a singer-songwriter working today:

Also worth noting is the fact that Stuart Ross' WAY BACK is unencumbered by antiquated, toothless, broken copyright restrictions. Copyleft can be a problem for some. I prefer the Copyfree Iniative (http://copyfree.org) myself.

I just wish I could have told him in the living years."
