A99 antenna on 10 meters
« on: July 07, 2013, 10:44:22 PM »
Just a quick note, today I tried out my ham rig on 10 meters on my old A99 CB antenna, and it works fine.  The SWR without the internal tuner was 2.3, and with the tuner switched on it was just over 1.  There were no mods or adjustments to the antenna needed, and with a patch panel either radio (ham or CB) can still use it.  Plug and play, it couldn't have been easier.

One of my Elmers 'gifted' me an OLD A-99 a while back.  It had been tuned for 10m.  It works like a Champ on 10m, almost as well (maybe better when conditions allow) on 20, have used on other bands as well!

Before I got the A-99 I was using a Radio Shack Fiberglass Whip (8') CB antenna with limited results, but still made contacts on 10m (use what you have if you have it).  It was mounted to a Trucker Mirror Mount attached to the top of my 12' ext ladder.

Amazon has a A-99 clone for less than $70 shipped for Prime Members

It's a great way for Techs to get on the air on 10m and have a viable antenna when they upgrade.

The Antron 99 is not a bad antenna...but if you have a vertical support about $3 of wire and some scrap plastic will replace it.
What no vertical hanger...a $15 to $20 expanding crappie pole will do also. I just can't see people spending so much money for what can be made easy and well with wire.

Having learned the Way of the J-Pole, I now agree.

A99s... they're a way to get started.  They work, and as a pre-packaged solution for under $100 they will get someone on the air.  There is some value in that for the person who just wants a plug-and-play CB/10m base system that works ASAP.  But they do carry an up-front cost for someone else's expertise.
