Fiber Fix stronger than duct tape?
« on: October 23, 2013, 07:26:49 PM »
I'm not sure if it's protocol to post the entire news story or not, but the short version is a kid at BYU invented a tape that is supposed to be stronger than duct tape. Seems promising and the emergency prep applications could be huge.

Quote
It all started with a story.

Spencer Quinn, who will graduate from BYU in 2014, heard a doctor tell a story about being on his own when his ATV broke down. The doctor happened to be carrying some medical casting tape and was able to fix his ATV and get home.

Quinn immediately started to wonder if the idea could be expanded. Today, a year later, his product is in more than 1,600 stores. His business is growing at an astonishing pace.

Quinn took his nascent idea to a cousin who is a mechanical engineer.

"We started making tweaks and changes to the medical casting tape, until we had made it something new," he said.

The new product is more dense, with a stronger knit and resin, and has been designed to adhere to wood, metal and plastic. The tape is cold and heat resistant, non-toxic and hardens like steel.

"The weave is really tight, so it is waterproof," Quinn said.

He describes his product as a low-cost, high-value problem-solver. The applications are endless, from plumbing to automotive to outdoor gear and emergency fixes. FiberFix is 100 times stronger than duct tape...

The only negative I see is you have to dunk it in water. That shouldn't be a problem in most situations though. I'm absolutely going to put some in my car because it could really get me out of a jam sometime. You probably do need to be sure before you use though it because it doesn't seem to easy to take off.

I'm watching the Shark Tank episode from last night on Hulu. Really looks like good stuff. It's the first one on the show so it won't take long to find it.

BYU BYU!!  One of my parents is a BYU grad, so I've always been a fan.  They seem to put out something cool like this on a regular basis.

Waiting for the Utah fans to show up and go at it with you all ;)

Looks like good stuff, but like they said once it's on something it's on there. For those of you who have looked at it which size would be the most useful? I was thinking the medium....

Yeah, I don't think they were prepared for that, but maybe business isn't their thing.
