TxGal from Texas to to New York for work trip
« on: January 25, 2015, 02:57:55 PM »
Help! I live in a moderate climate of Texas and will be making a trip to New York for work during the blizzard. I have a wool coat and have thermal under wear, but really don't think I have clothing for the severely cold weather of New York

What extras should I have in my suitcase for the trip?

Depending on your line of work, I recommend lined pants, a thermal undershirt and warm wool socks.  depending on where you end up, you can ping me if you run into trouble and need some help.  We are 60ish miles north of NYC.

Thanks! We will be there helping the electric company get the power restored (after the blizzard). I'm sure it will be an adventure!  8)

High warm waterproof boots.
If you can't find good ones by you, grab a bunch of heavy socks and a good pair or rubber boots.
Does the power company give you dielectric boots? If so make sure you have room for socks.

Layers. Scarf to cover and protect your face and neck. Hooded sweatshirt under your jacket will help keep cold wind off your ears and neck.

Weather is supposed to be in the mid 20's, but later in the week into the single digits at night.
Are you flying up or driving? If so I hope its a line truck with some weight and ground clearance. If the highways get bad get off them. Better off with the surface streets if need be.

Yes on the waterproof boots and good socks.

In your carry on:
winter hat and winter gloves
a scarf or a baklava
couple extra Clif bars
hidden cash (belt/sock/undershirt)
long underwear
wind sheilding sunglasses, dont need to be super dark tint, snow in your eyes can hurt and your cont see well looking into the wind
Water, you will evaporate and sweat off moving around.
your standard EDC stuff minus the knives and CCW... that state is not friendly to us gun people

I am in NYC right now but plan to be heading back to Long Island before it really starts kicking up.
I always keep a hat, neck gaiter and gloves in my bag.
Also if you are working outside thermals, hand warmers and warm socks and good boots.

You may want goggles as the winds are going to be bad and have already started picking up.

People have covered most things you'll need, but take some cash with you.

Nylons or tights to wear under your other layers.

It sounds like you might actually be working outside--if so, Facebook can actually be a useful thing--if you are on it and are connected w locals,-put our a call to folks local to you for gear you can borrow.  Someone among your friends might have thermal boots, snow pants, a ski jacket etc.  Can't hurt.  Or you could go old school & call around.  Someone might have old ski gear.

Yes, Frugal Upstate, I will be working outside at least 16 hour days (mostly in a vehicle if all goes well and we don't get stranded!!!). I did what you suggested and found a local friend this morning that goes to Alaska often. I called to see if she had ice cleats, but she offered to loan me some winter gear--boots, socks, scarf, hat!!  8)

Great!  Outside for hours at a time you really do need the right gear.  Although now it looks like it all shifted east and north enough that perhaps they won't need you?

Yes, that's true. We didn't need to go. No money for me, but happy that it wasn't as bad as predicted. One thing we heard was that in one area there were 29 homes without power and 28 of the power outages were caused by one snowplow hitting a single pole.
