Wanna play 'name that weed'???
« on: April 23, 2015, 11:15:20 PM »
I got a pile of chip mulch that apparently was full of see for this particular weed. For the last two years it's come up like gang busters through my strawberry / blueberry beds. Last year, I just plucked / pulled it and laid it down. It continued to thrive after this, and since I have netting over the area keeping on top of it was challenging as well.

Anybody know what this is and what my best solution is?

Any input is much appreciated!

Mick

Looks like Canadian thistle.  I've been fighting it for a few years here at the house.  Very deep roots when established.  And pokey if you leave it to linger

As far as solutions go I would suggest geese. They enjoy thistle but im not sure if they would go after your strawberries.

Looks a little like milk thistle. Which would be a great "weed" to bring in Monarch butterflies and other pollinators. They are also pokey if left to grow (and have substantial taproots).

Looks like some type of thistle. Is that Creeping Charley I see coming out from under the straw?

"Barren Strawberry"?

Cedar

A google search brought up "mock strawberry" or "indian strawberry." Looks like its edible, but tasteless, with a little bit of nutritional value.
